I was running my M the other day when it started making a real load noise like it was grinding rocks. the noise was coming from the distributor area. I drove it back to the shed when the RPMs shot way up without me touching the trottle, all the while still making the noise. I shut it down and tried to restart it, it would crank but not start. I pulled the dist.cap off, cranked it again and saw the rotor bug was not turning. Its not a thrown rod I know that so what could it be????

Problem is stripped timing gears. This is probably what happened:

First either the governor drive or governor idler gear failed. This caused the RPM"s suddenly shoot up (which is what happens when the gov stops turning...)

Then debris from the failure on the governor side caused one of the gears on the camshaft side (crank gear, cam drive or distributor drive) to strip out which is why the dist rotor bug no longer turns.

Only thing to do is pull off the front end of the tractor, then remove the timing cover, clean up the mess and replace the busted parts.

Aside from handling some large, heavy, parts - front bolster, etc - repair is not a difficult job (been there!)

pull your dist. see if the gears are shot. this happened to me last june. if so you need to replace the distributor drive shaft or the distributor gear or both.. just hope you havent stripped out the distributor drive gear.

Ya done and went and ate the timing gears , now it is time to pull the ft. off the tractor plus the pan and spend money . They do this once in a while. Check the key way in the camshaft and make sure that itis good i have found a couple that were shot .

Remove the distributor (or magneto).

1. Does the distributor (or magneto) operate when turning by hand? If not, internal gearing could be damaged (or impulse spring breakage)

2. Look to see if the slotted drive gear that mates to the camshaft turns while operating the starter. If no rotation, the cam gear could have broken.
