While plowing snow the other day, number 2 cylinder on the 300U ceased to fire. Finished
a couple little things then put her away (try
that on a 2-cylinder Greenie!).Feared the worst (stuck valve), but it was just the worst of four fouled plugs probably
caused by a combination of cold running and
a too-rich mixture, together with oldish wires. Swapped the plugs, replaced the wires. The
local NAPA had a cap but not a rotor, so deferred on those two for the time being. It
was fun to change one plug and wire at a time,
start it up, and note it running a bit better
with each new plug and wire (I do one pair at a time to know where I've introduced a miss if I do introduce a miss in fabricating
the new wires.) However, I did notice that the cap is a bit
loose on the distributor. Is there supposed to be gasket between the cap
and the distributor? Or is it just that the clips have lost their fallorum (oomph)? If the latter case, is the solution simply to
're-arc' the spring clips, or are those separately available? It runs fine now, but it sure isn't right and I'm
sure it makes things more vulnerable to moisture
and to eventually just falling apart.
