Gentleman and Ladies. I have some suggestions about our Farmall forum. All the other sites that I am a member of seem to have a more sound set-up. Here are my ideas:

When you make a post it goes to the top of the board and then is bumped down as other people make NEW topic posts. However, I think that as people reply to your original post, your post should be brought up to the top of the first page so that people can find out if you or someone else replied to it. The reason for this suggestions is that it brings the more interesting or more valuable posts to the top so that people can keep reflecting on certain posts that they had interest in. I think this would benefit the site, and the users greatly.

I like the idea of the Forums showing which topics are the hot topics, meaning that a certain topic has been replied to the most, and or the most interesting to other forum users. But again this would be solved by changing the organiztion to my above suggestion of popular topics staying at the top of the board.

Let me know what you folks think, and how we could tell the Board moderators to possibly make this change for us. Thanks for your input.

A few more thoughts. in reply to Tanner Clark, 03-08-2005 10:21:52
Now we have an entire page filled up with

Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome
Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome
Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome
Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome
Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome
Forum organization, my thoughts and yours welcome
It's a waste of space, it adds nothing to the thread.

the subject line could be used as a reply
line, one liner.

If the most popular posts rose to the top this one would never leave.
Leave it alone, it works.

The thing I can't figure out is which post to reply too?

I'm new to this board but have been a frequent discussion board user for many years. It is amazing the amount of knowledge that is out there available from others sharing the same obsessive compulsive disorders that you have! ;-)

Most discussion forums have it where you reply to the original post and it keeps the posts in order of the time they were made.

On this board the post where I replied to the very first question asked ends up at the very bottom of the thread and it does make things confusing in trying to figure out who is answering what question.

FWIW, Nathan

Tanner, if you want your post at the top -- start a new post and cut and paste the old one in it, so that anyone interested can easily read what has already been said. Or if you get very few replies, just ask the question again, maybe the right people will be on the forum at that time. As mentioned below, the main problem with the post being automatically forced to the top is that most of them are off topic, or questions like "Which Farmall is best?". I have seen questions like that on RPM that were on page 1 for months.

I agree with you Tanner that I like the bump to top format. Why can"t we have a flexible format where the user could choose either format. Why could this not be provided where with the click of a mouse the format could be selected to bump to top or be chronological. It is just a format issue.

A second thing about this forum even worse is all the wasted space on a page taken up by repeated subject lines that are repeated over and over again with no new information added other than the reply poster"s name. Many forums show the original posters subject line at the top and any reply post under it is a reply line visible on the page without expanding. If a posters rply is a one liner it is shown without expanding. If the reply goes beyond the first line the rest is shown when expanded. You can see what I mean. I have altered the subject line on this post.

The winds of change don"t blow very hard on this forum. Overall it"s a great forum but a few little changes could make it better.

I hang around some fora that work the way you propose. That way has its advantages, but for us, for the way we interact, this one is better. That said, I myself would to change the one thing the hang of which I haven't been able get. When you expand a post to see it and all the replies why not have the replies scroll down the page in the order they were made AND NOT IN BLOODY REVERSE ORDER SO YOU CAN NEVER FIGURE OUT WHO SAID WHAT WHEN?????!! Excuse me, please. I get carried away sometimes, or should be.

I like the forum setup the way it is. If I haven"t visited for days, I simply go back and "catch up". I like being able to find posts where they were and can recall them where they are placed and by date. Besides, us full-blooded Norwegian hyphenated Americans would have trouble learnin" sumpin" new.

Tanner The damn threads would be jumping all over the place. I for one happen to believe a question that only receives one responce is just as important as the one that receives 50. This is not a popularity contest. It is a chance to share information.

YT can try your suggestion, but I guarentee they will be shut down within a year.

Eric: Leaving my e mail open is something I've done on every post since coming to YT 5 years ago. I do not get unusual amounts of spam or scam or whatever you want to call. I have however met some very fine people, half of whom have never posted at YT. I encourage everyone who writes to me about old tractors to get involved at YT. No one here will bite, oh sure we get a few little disputes going, but quite often those little disputes bring out some good info. You'll also see new guys come and make a stand every time this happens.

There is a good natured middle aged man not far from me, quite good on doing imitations. He, geneb and I all have met. He does a great number poking fun at gene and I in an argument, kind of a monalogue except he plays out both parts. Gene if your listining in, you know who I mean, you would enjoy it. My family and his thought it hilarious.

I am going to have to agree with everyone else on this one and say that I like it the way that it is. I have visited a few other forums and I find this one the easiest to use, as well as providing the most help and information possible. All the people on the site do a great job of answering questions and making the site friendly and helpful. I am really glad to have found this site. Although I don't think changing the layout would effect that, I would still prefer to leave it well enough alone.

I find there are as many opinions as there are people. Personally, I have used the forum several times and have been very satisfied with it's function. I, like many others know enough about computers to get myself in trouble. I find it very easy to navigate the site. Where else can you get this much access to hands on knowledge for free.

I will preface this by saying that I have not read any of the other posts yet.

My thoughts on the forum are to leave it like it is. Granted there are popular threads that can get pushed off the first page, and take some time to find. But, on other discussion forums I have seen where a reply bumps a topic to the top, if someone asks a question and does not get a response, that question can possibly be pushed onto page three in a matter of minutes by a few questions that get lots of responses. Then, the originator (or someone else) has to bump it to get it back to page one. Currently, a new post will stay on the first page for several hours, if not all day. The threads stay in the order which they were posted with a date/time stamp, so if you know what date a post originated, it is not hard to find.

The other thing that I like here is that you can reply to a response and the reply is seen immediately below the response it is to rather than at the end of the thread. To me it takes longer to read the box with the original response showing in each and every reply to it. Personally, I find the other type of forum more confusing to read and use than this one. Just my opinion…

Hi Tanner, I just sent a message to the MagMan to see if you ever got that tractor running. We were
wondering what you've been up to.

I like the forum the way it is too. What's the tractor status. If you haven't done so, install a new set of plugs. How's the weather in VA? Hal

Personally, I like it just the way it is. If we go to sorting by most popular topics, 4 out of 5 times it will be an OT thread. That's okay, and I like OT threads, but I don't want to see them forced to the top of the board. I like to check the site from time-to-time, starting at the top, and work my way down, knowing that the very top items are new topics. Plus, I don't want to have to relearn how to post a message. My too sense.

Jeeze guys, you don't to attack my thoughts. But I guess I asked for your opinions. The reason I posted this, is the frustration I have when I make an important post and then it falls down into the bowls of the website and nobody knows when i would reply with other questions to that particular post. And then you have to start a whole new post just to catch the eyes of the same people that were trying to help you to begin with. So that is why I like the bring it to the top of the forum idea.

I made another post about my 44 model H and its starting and running issues. Check it out guys. Thanks. And no, I am not new to this site.

Tanner,

Nobody is jumping on you. :>)

As for your H. It only takes three things to make a gasoline engine run: compression, ignition and fuel.

Find out which one of those three things your H is lacking, repair it and it will start every time you touch the starter switch.

Additionally, if I were fighting one that would not start and it was drivin' me up a wall, the first thing I'd do is give it a compression test to see if it will ever run or not.

tanner, what do you expect from guys that think anything newer than 55 is new fangled? :-)

you are right. this type of posting went off everyones else's board back in 98 but no use in trying to get anybody still using a belt drive 386 running windows 5.1 with a 14.4 dial up to get anything newer.

they couldn't buy their puter parts at auctions then! :-) :-) :-)

Careful, I'm still running an 8088 with DOS 3.0 and a cradle for the phone headset on the side. When your ‘puter is from Goodwill, you can’t be choosey! :>) LOL!

Actually, there are gives and takes to almost everything in life. It sounds to me like most of the people that frequent here feel this format has more they like than dislike. It might be quaint and old fashioned, but then again…it works!

If you believe that line about the 8088 and phone cradle I bought from Goodwill, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I’ll sell you real cheap :>)

I have a high school senior that is into computers pretty heavy (not the gaming but the real functioning) so as part of his school work he messes around with a lot of network/hardware stuff. Actually, most of the time I’m running on wireless internet services, utilizing a D-link wireless network router and NIC card for my year and a half old laptop. That way I can peruse the board from my living room, office, or even from the shop about 90 ft away from the house. Yeh, he spoils me, I’m gonna miss that guy next year when he goes off to college. :>)
