Reciently got a nice running Farmall 400. Starts and runs like a dream, but the gear shift is slow and sluggish: no gear noise; no whines or grinds. Just stiff. Any tips appreciated.

If it is sludge and crud buildup, I believe IH recommended that you drain out a gallon or two of the old gear lube and temporarily replace it with the same amount of kerosene, then drive it for a period of time. Then drain all and replace with fresh lube. With the shifter problem your experiencing, you should be able to feel any improvments as process happens.

Lee: Describe this stiff shifting with just a bit more detail; when. which gears and which way, up or down. Could be the gear oil as others have stated. Could also be clutch and TA adjustment. It could also be someone has rebuilt bottom end of shift lever and not ground it off quite enough. It could also be a combination of the above.

We just need a bit more detail on that stiff shifting. Is it worse at times?

If it is stiff gear lube, don't use the TA til you change the rear end lube. Too heavy of lube is what can do in a torque. Had a TA last 32 years. Tractor was used hard (can't guess at how many thousand hours), but I wouldn't touch the TA til gears warmed up winter or summer. Maybe dumb luck?

Maybe the gear lube has turned to sludge? Too heavy a lube? I know that with my 300,the old worn out trans lube has caked up at the seals and turned to thick crud. That cant help shifting smoothness.
The original lube was motor oil,but they now recommend Hy Trans hydraulic/trans fluid.
