It didn't smoke before? The German engines are famous for smoking after start-up/at idle. Putting them under a heavy load clears it up, but it will come back if the engine idles for any amount of time. Installing the higher compression pistons improves cold starts and reduces smoke at idle a bit. Sounds normal to me, but if you think it is smoking worse than before and it doesn't improve, the easiest place to start looking is the injectors.

One more thought, did you grind the valves and seats? Doing so will reduce compression enough to cause smoking and even hard starts.

ok we'll start off with the injectors were completely rebuilt by local diesel shop. the intake valves were ground and the exhaust valves had to be replaced. done by local machine shop. after the 30 min of running it was a little smoke not a lot. and when you throttled it up to 3/4 it was ok as far as running and sounding but any higher throttle it sounded like it was breaking up alittle. and would smoke more. are they that cold blooded that after 30min. of idling would be still to cold still not alot of smoke did not drive or put under load at all yet would like to get more running no load time lett everything seat good. thanks any other thoughts let me know thanks

a good running diesel will do that. as long as it is gray. the diesel needs time to warm up and get to opperating temp. the exhaust will warm to 400 degrees before the smoke is gone. a tank or block heater will help that in the cold and run #2 fuel as long as you can before winter( saves wear and tear on the vavles)).....

there is a difference in fuel---whether its farm fuel or hiway fuel---the #2 fuel is thicker and helps keep the engine cool. #1 fuel is a lot thinner to help start in the winter. I do a 80%-20% mix in winter. 80 #2 and 20 #1 so the valves dont knock and chatter. when you get the hole fixed in the exhaust--the smoke will be minimized.

sounds good how comes leak in the ex manifold would cause more smoke. maybe becasue back pressure problem. not real experinced with diesels pretty good with gas motors thanks again

the line on the pump is about 1/16 above the punch mark. I didn't touch pump during this rebuild any helpful ways to check would be great thanks

Check the static timing of your pump. If thats set right the pump may need a trip to the repair shop to. Stands to reason if the injectors were bad the pump might be to. I just bought a 756 with the 310 that smokes and starts hard so I'am going thru the same learning curve you are. Mine has a M&W turbo kit that makes matters worse as the pump is turned up to provide more fuel to go with the extra air. BTW does anyone know what company supplys the higher compression pistons for the germans? I have not been able to find them in any catalog.
