It appears that there are two bullet shaped rear lights for the letter series. One has a seperate little red lens and bullet at the top of the white lens light. The other has just one "housing" and the reflector has a red lens insert in it. They are both "switched" housings, to go from red to white. Was there a year/model application on these? Or was it just whatever the dealer had in stock? Which would be correct for the 1949 H? My neighbor has a 1950 H all one owner original he bought new and it has the light with the little bullet on top.

What CNKS said about the parts book is right on.

The set of lights came with a single white rear light just like the headlights unless the combination light was ordered as an additional option. I may be a little off on the time, as I haven't got any information in front of me right now but I believe the combination light with the little lamp on top came along about '50 or '51. It was probably replaced by the one with the red set in the big reflector within a year of so. Since both were available as dealer accessories, they could have been added to any tractor at about any time.

I have an original 1951 M and the rear light could just as well be a headlight with just a single clear bulb. No bullet on top or a red lenses in the reflector. I would assume this was a standard item unles a tail light was requested.

I have a 1950 M with the small switched light on top, my uncle has a 1951 M with the regular light on it. I don't know why, nor am I trying to suggest anything, I'm just sharing some info.

It will have what the dealer ordered, or what IH sent him. The non-switchable one is standard.

My opinion on this is that if they are in the parts book, they are correct. Without looking those items up (they are both in my parts books), there is usually no serial number break, and no real way of knowing if they came on the tractor or not, unless like your neighbor, someone actually remembers. I don't believe either of them were available for the very early tractors, but were produced later, I could be wrong.
