H4 Continental Magneto, can it be switch for H use

I have an angled magneto I bought at a swap meet years ago. I got it home and realized the mounting plate was angled. Somebody told me it is for a Continental engine. Can it be used on a regular Farmall H or am I going to have to sell it or trade it for a usable H4 Mag. It has a wild blue mega-spark. Any ideas out there?

Thanks,

Scott

It is from the CONTINETAL engine used on the pulltype combines. It could be used on the H but you will need to change the timing of the mag drive gear so it would fire at TDC. I have played with one on a block and it could work ok if you change the gear mesh on the mag gear so that it fires on TDC If i remember moving three teeth will do it.

What about swapping out the base from the H mag?

That should work and would be necessary to get the timing right. From the other comments here, looks like the impulse coupling from an H-4 tractor mag should be swapped on too.

I know what you mean, I have one too.
Mine was used on the power unit of a combine. (Model 61 or 62, I think)

The difference is the spark retard. I think a standard H4 on a tractor retards 35 deg, and the one I have is only something like 15 deg. Not 100% sure of the numbers, I have the details at home, not here.

Scott, Are you referring to a right angle distributor? If so, this was an aftermarket distributor and fit all the letter series tracvtors. You will need a coil to go with it. I don"t know of a angled magneto, but that doesnt mean there wasn"t one, just an extreem rarity.

Yes scott thats right. I have rebuilt a few of them they have a much slower lag angle than the regular H4. I how ever have never tryed one on an H and always wondered if it would work my self. You may not be able to time it right. They were used on bailers ,Combines and continental motors. If you have a chance to try it on an H let us know how you make out so I will know in the future. It is an H4 Magneto. It is the exact same as the Mag on My Farmall H. It does, however, have an angle mounting base. The base on the H mag is vertical, straight up and down. The base on the goofy mag is angle about 30 degrees or so. Somebody said it was from a flat-top engine.

Spark is blue as the sky and grabs you quick.
