H road gear

On my H road gear is very dificult to get going, and once i get going it feels like is i go up an ant hill she will stall. Is this normal or do you think im low on power? Also how do you get your H going in road gear? Just slip the clutch alot? Or is 4-5 a slider gear?

Kevin, are there any tractor shows coming up in your area any time soon? Not trying to pick on you, please don't take it that way, but if you could talk and visit first hand with some of the guys that grew up on an H you would gain an education that will never be printed in any book. Maybe there is a club you could join? Please don't give up asking questions here, it's just that a proper diagnoses is almost impossible in these forums, all we can do is make suggestions. Hang in there, that ol' girl will be purring like a kitten soon.

Mine won't go uphill in any gear. Darned gas is too expensive! :>)

Great looking H. I am brand new with an H. Have run a C and Super C for about 10 years. Last Sat I was mowing. Stoped to pick up a big stick and got back on and thought I had it 3rd when infact I had it in 5th. It took off like a rocket. Granted it wasnt' up hill but the 6' belly mower was running in 8" to 10" thick grass. The only problem mine has in road gear is I get a pretty good shimmy in the front end if I go to fast. When I get a little time I'll look into it.

Let some air out of one of the front tires and the shimmy should stop or at least decrease in intensity. Let air out of the tire that is in the worst shape. Let the good tire bear the brunt of the work. It should work fine until you have the time to get the shaft bearings and stuff replaced.

Kevin:
I've found that you need to wind her up in 4th , then quickly change into 5th at reduced throttle; sounds like you have a slight carb problem... nothing big likely- just an adjustment. I had the same problem with my H last year and rebuilt the carb.. problem solved!

There is definately a problem with power on your H. The trick is to wind it up full throttle in 4th, push in the clutch and pull the shifter modestly (not forcefully into 5th. There will be a mild gnashing of teeth, but no major grief. %th gear is narrower than all the rest, and cannot stand forcefull rakeing of teeth. I have operated H, SH, M, 350, 400, and SCs for 45 years (I'm 56) and they still have the original trans W/O any down time. The machines are tough. If yours is not able to pull 5th smartly up a 15% slope pulling nothing, it is very anemic and needs to be tuned timed and have the carb adjusted.
