w-4 value/use

How much is a good straight w-4 worth? How good is it for plowing, manure spreading, and hualing loaded hay wagons down the road? Does it have enough power for road gear? Is there anychance she would pull a loaded hay wagon down the road in road gear, or even an empty hay wagon?

Jeff needs to check his engine compresion! I have a W4 with compression about 100 on all 4. Twice last fall I brought 2 wagons in tandam, 4 miles with 110 small squares on each. Took a bit of shifting to get rolling but after that it pulled just fine. Mine is 1942, rebuilt the engine 20 years ago. Use it almost every day in the summer.

It depends on what kind of a hay wagon your talking about. I have many fond memories of using the W4 to pull loads of small square bales- indeed, that was it's main job. It would do it in road gear, but if you got to a hill you had to downshift to fourth. As far as just being a handy tractor, the W4 wasn't really it. Ours had the old tube style seat that was all worn out and it had a permanent list to the right, so you were always sloshed to the right side of the seat, which got anoying after while. That doesn't stop me from wanting one now, though.

The value of a W4 standard varies greatly on where you live. You can get a pretty penny for them in some places in the USA, but up here in Ontario you can't hardly give them away-- saw one advertised near me for $900 exc. running condition and good tin/rubber- the guy just could not sell it. I have a 1950 model and love it (purchased it last year). You will never pull a full wagon with it in road gear for sure... it likely would pull an empty wagon though in high gear; they are a super great tractor to work on and parts are very easy to find. Mine is going in for a long overdue paint job in May.

There great little tractors. I'v used one in the woods to pull logs and you can get into alot more places than say with. my Super C, or a H, M, etc. Andrew

Runs great, paint is ok, kind of looks like jeffs, sheet metal is as straight as an arrow, tires are fairly new, asking price is $1500. What do you think, is it worth trying to sell one of my old 4 wheelers for?

Not sure about the 3 pt hitch thing; as for the $1500 price tag... that's not a bad price. After all they aren't making any more of these so they can only increase in value. I looked at this picture of my W4 and can't really see how a 3 pt hitch could even mount on there without a lot of alterations. Boy oh boy, looking at that picture again I really need a rear rim!
