I need to clean out the gas tank on my MD. Can I get it off w/o taking the steering shaft off that runs over the top of it??

If you are asking about the small gasoline tank that holds about a gallon for starting the tractor, you can remove it without moving the steering. I removed mine for cleaning without a problem. If you are refering to the main tank which holds the diesel fuel, you will need to remove the steering and the throttle shaft.

Dan's right, you've got to slide the steering and throttle shaft rearward to remove the main tank.

On a gas M, if you unbolt the steering wheel stanchion at the tranny deck (3 bolts) you can swing the steering wheel/steering shaft/stanchion assembly upward. (The steering shaft will swing about the U-joint at the forward end of the tank.) This will give sufficient clearance to remove the tank without having to remove the steering shaft.

I'm not familiar with the throttle linkage on the MD - you may have to disconnect or remove it in order to do this.

Not real familiar with the diesels myself but I think the MD has that control rod for switching from gas to diesel running paralell to the steering shaft. This might cause interferance?

you should be able to get the tank off without removing the steering shaft.

I have always had to remove the steering shaft on any M or H in order to remove the tank.

If it is set up the same as the H's are, I took off the Precleaner and then took the tank off. It worked for my H.
