Will this work well with my M ?

I got this at an auction last weekend for $30 dollars. I thought it was a pretty good deal. The shaft seems to turn the blades pretty easily, so I think the main parts are in working condition. I weld well enough to get by, so I'm not too worried about any small holes and cosmetics and such. I'm working on restoring a '48 Farmall M and I have a question. Do you think this thing would be a good match for the M mowing some pastures? The horses handle the grass for me, but they leave me the weeds. Sorry in advance if the picture thing ends up wrong in this post. I havent posted here much.

Thanks,

Kurt

I agree with Sgt K, you stole that for $30.00. We can't use pull behinds around here, to many rock, all of us have three points. That looks nice, what make ? See ya and good luck.

John,

It says BMB on the side in very faded letters. The shell has been welded on a few times by an amateur stick weldor as far as I can tell. Another non-professional will be welding on it a little more sometime this summer :).

I still have to do some more work to the M. I bought it for $150 and it runs great, but appears to have a blown head gasket, is missing a fender and is badly in need of a paint job. Its an XIB for high altitude pistons. I just hope the head isnt cracked (water in the oil), or the amateur welder may be attempting cast iron (a mystical process that I understand involves drilling holes, funny nickel rods some sand and church attendance in the front row would be a plus). I may have to let a pro do this for me.

Here is a picture of the M

Kurt,

It appears you are the Master of good deals!!!!! $30 for a brush hog and $150 for a tractor sounds good to me. Even if the tractor does need work, besides, think of all the fun you'll be having!

About cast iron block welding, I did that, once. I had a 436IH block that had a freeze crack in the side of the block. It still ran and the tractor worked, but I could'nt stand that wet seeping block. Block sealer almost worked, but it was still wet.

When I was younger, and braver, I fancied myself as a pretty good "chicken crap" welder. I started in on this 436 block and the more I welded, the bigger the crack got! I finally heated the whole side of the block with a big rose-bud tip (verrrrry unscientific) and got the thing welded up. One side of the crack didn't stop till it finally hit a freeze plug. How I kept from melting sleeve O-rings or ruining that block I'll never know. Thank goodness I've matured some and I don't get myself into those kinds of messes any more.

By the way, are you close by me? I was thinking, if you say you have a little welding experience too, and I hold the torch in one hand while you're weld'in and we jack up the tractor so it's sorta lean'in to one side maybe..... .....;)

Sgt K,

"It appears you are the Master of good deals".

Now all we have to do is convince the Mrs. of the same thing and I'm all set! I'm in Colorado, NE of Colorado Springs.

I should be smart enough to send this welding out, but I dont want this thing to turn into a really big money pit. I know it will be a money pit, but I would like to minimize the damage. This is my first tractor restoration and I'd like to not pay way too much. All this work will keep me out of the tavern for sure.

Don't be afraid to weld the block ... just another weld . But it might be smart to use a Henrod welder if you can get your hands on one. Bought one a couple of years ago and it is amazing what you can weld with these gas welder and how much easier it is to well cast with gas reather than an arc welder. IF you are going to weld with an arc welder though just weld s-l-o-w
seem to be the problem with most folks welding cast!! heat and time. As someone told ya heat her up good and weld a short spot like no more than one inch at a time unless you are good with a welder than go at it you can weld the entire block if you are GOOD !!!!! !

Ossie,
What"s a Henrod Welder? Is it a wire welder that also has argon, or some other gas? I have brazed cast iron before with a gas torch, but that"s about the limit of my experience.

Thirty dollars!!! Looks like you got a heck of a deal. I would also suggest an overriding clutch. I bought one for my H at the local Rural King store.
Good Luck

Thanks, I certainly wont forget the clutch. I understand stopping at times can be a bit of a trick without it! They have them over at the Big R store in Falcon. I get to pull the head and do some other mechanicals to the M before we get to mowing anyway, I just wanted to check and see what you folks thought of the idea before I started doing anything to fix this mower up a little. This auction was kinda strange. They sold a used Craftsman LT 1000 lawn tractor for $500 and this thing went for $30. Auctions are like that I guess.

I had a 7 foot pull behind and the M didn't even know it was back there. But, the problem is with that long PTO shaft you will hear a banging in the transmission when you make a sharp turn. I added a 3 point and sold the pull behind because I couldn't stand to hear that banging

YOur pic worked out well, and your M should enjoy the same success. Just make sure you add an over run clutch to your PTO.
