Dilema solved.

I was finally able to get it to polarize as positive ground and charge yesterday. No matter what I did would get it to polarize as negative ground. I cleaned on it some more and totally redid the wireing, and messed around with it all morning.. got the regulator working good, and finally got the genny to polarize as negative ground. Just out of the blue it started working.

After further investigation... I think I had some dirty terminals, and a partial short of the field post giving me some problems.

Works great now. Genny will run ignition, and 3 55w lamps, and still kick about 2 amps positive for charge, at mid throttle and up.

Something I was going to ask you in your last post -- you WERE reversing that diode you were using as a cutout when you were changing polarities, right? :) I'm an electronic tech too and I've made that mistake a few times -- Brian

Yep, the diode/cutout was checked. At first I thought that was my problem.. but when i double checked it i knew I was in for a long day of troubleshooting... Also.. I was keeping 3 meters hooked up.. one on the armature.. one on the battery, and one inline with the field to measure field current.

I'm glad it's working. i was running out of 'weekend' to work on it.

thanks for the ideas guys.
