Hmmmm, well Darn!

Went in and checked on the old tractor today.

All the sheet metal except the hood has to be completely sanded down again and repainted because the precleaner solution interacted with the hardner somehow and the paint "shrunk" and cracked.

Feel sorry for that young lad who is doing the painting. He was really blue and down in the mouth this morning. :>(

Otherwise, she is starting to look like an IH tractor again, tho.

Well I hope so. Went to the machine shop and left the stuff there for him to check on bushings that that would fit. He seemed to know what I needed anyway. After seeing that 966 of yours I'm thinkin of having those guys paint my SMTA if I get it running.

Allen, what is a long process paint job like that there costing. Mine are done and the neighbor wants his JD's painted. I said I would do the 50 for cost and another 10 years wood cutting. Buit I want to make some money on the other 5. If I do them

Hi Dave,

They are solely underpaid on the paint jobs, in my opinion.

I say this because they are so darned picky, which I really like. They treat these old tractors just like their own as long as they are in their posession.

After all the oil leaks are found and repaired, they manually take the tractor clear down to the metal with scrapers and wire brushes. They charge me $1600 and say they are losing money.

I've watched 'em work and I believe it. Probably why they've got a line of tractors around the block just waiting to be done too.

49 years ago I was prepping my 47 Ford Coupe hotrod for it's First coats of 32 coats of black lacquer.
My best pal's older brother had a body shop and we were allowed one space to work on our cars. So after months of blocking and priming we were set to go to paint. I spent the entire day masking and papering the car. Perfect!. Shop owner came by and said, "nice job, not get rid of all that newspaper. It sheds paper lint everywhere. You need to buy yhe right paper. I won't even paint your car free with that on there". Early lesson I've never forgotten. And this guy wasn't a "perfectionist" just a pro who knew his materials. Orange peel is a rough texture that is present in ALL paint jobs (have to look closely on the good ones) even from the factory -- The degree depends on the paint and the skill of the painter, including the robots in the factory. The stuff in the picture is from using incompatible components, as Allan said. That's why I use more expensive paint -- the components to use are spelled out on the spec sheets.

That looks like orange peeling, they may have to strip the paint. That has to be disheartening
for everybody. Hal

Allen, how do ? What is the plan for you paint man for the rims, just a lot of tape ? I have been thinking of taking the rims off the hubs but what a pain ! Also, what is the color that he is using. I have seen rustoleum has a IH red but it looks a bit darker on the internet. I also do not want a million dollars wrapped up in this but I do want it to look good. Your does.

Hi John,

They use 2150 with a hardner as far as I know. That's what they charged me for on the last one anyway.

I've never watched 'em do the rims, but I do know that they are the very last thing that is done (even after they scrape the tires) and I'm almost sure that they leave 'em on the rim somehow.

Dunno,

Allan

Hey Allen are they usen Du Pont 77S hardner this is what we have found that works the best with the 2150 about a 1/4 of a bottel to a gal. and let it set for 10 to 15 min. after mixen before spraying it .

John, get your paint from your Case-IH dealer, it will be the right color and won't break the bank. I have used Rustoleum IH red, it is way too dark.

wash it down with laquar thinner and and reprime it sand it prime it again and paint it . Some days you'll have that. Now after ya get it back make sure the first thing ya do is put a big old scratch in it , the first one is always the hardest to handel.

That sucks. I feel sorry for him to, try and do a nice job and something go's wrong, sounds like me. LOL!! It looks good so far. Have you figured out if your going to keep the black stripe on it or not? With a nice coat of paint any of the 2 decal set ups would look sweet!

Naw,

I'm old and set in my ways. Gotta stay with the straight old 966 look that I'm used to. :>(

Yes Sir, this painter is just an absolute perfectionist and even if a little tiny run shows up, down she comes again.

But this is a lot of metal to redo. No rhyme nor reason to it either. Some items came out perfectly, others shriveled. He said he thinks the cleaner had not finished evaporating or something before he started shootin' it.

Dunno, poor guy.

Looks great! Please enlighten us as to what part they are taping off in the grill area?

Brian,

Yeah, I know about the straightjacket thing; lots of folks think I'm completely nuts doing things this way.

But, I figure if I can get away with having them put the tractor back in 'like new' condition, it is still going to end up being just a very small fraction of the cost of a new one nowadays.

I just cannot see dropping $80K on a silly tractor because the neighbor has one. Doesn't make sense to me. If it costs $4500 to put an engine in a tractor, that sure seems cheap to me, comparatively speaking.
