I keep getting surprises on my Farmall "B". I replaced the magneto on it and reset the timing(I think?)and when I tried to restart it the oil breather cap hit the roof. Kaboom! Is this a timing problem?

Haas explained it just check to see when you are on TDC that the rotor points to #1 plug wire. It wouldnt be the first time that those gears that turn the rotor were out of time and the rotor doesent line up correct.

As others said, you are most likely 180 degrees out of time. This happens because the mags have a two lobe cam on the breaker points and a 2 to 1 gear between the breaker cam and the rotor of the distributor. You can change by taking breaker point cover off (this contains the 2 to 1 gears) and turning rotor 1/2 turn and putting the cover back on. Never saw one blow the cap off the air cleaner, but my MD blew plenty of the oil in the air cleaner out the intake. I expect a good backfire would blow the cap off.

You were 180 off unless you changed the gear timing of the rotor. When you get #1 on TDC check the rotor to make sure it lines up with the correct tower on the mag cap.

Hi Gene....Gear timing of the rotor??? Don't follow what you mean by that. The mag is a proffessionaly re-built one fro Mag-Man. I set the double dots on the gov gear with the double dots on the cam gear and the single dot on the cam gear with the single dot on the crank gear. I set # 1 piston at TDC and matched it with the flywheel mark and the #1 distributor wire. Ain't that right???

Dix,

Dunno, but that happened to me one time in a Chevy pickup. Blew every gasket in the engine out.

The crankcase had filled with fuel somehow, probably a bad fuel pump. I had been running for twenty miles when it happened.

Boy! It was loud too.

Allan

Don't I know it! I was standing next to it and almost messed up my pants. I guess I will have to drain the oil pan and make sure before I try it again...Thanks Allen

It sure sounds like it. Make sure when you start timing it, you have #1 cylinder at the compression cycle. Take out spark plug, and hand crank until the compression pushes your finger out of plug hole. At this point you can check to make sure rotor is pointed at #1 on your distributer cap.... note rotation of rotor, and double check to make sure wires are plugged in correctly. I'm guessing you may have installed mag 180 degrees off.

Dave, I forgot to ask, but would that cause the oil cap to blow off???Thanks again...Dixieland

Yes I would say if its the timing that caused it that you did not get compression stroke when you timed it. Alot of time they back fire back through the carb when there 180 off so I guess if you got gas there and a back fire it could do something like that. If you try to start it again and it justs pops or does not start you can move your plug wire 180 on the cap and that will tell you if you installed the mag 180 off. MagMan
