For some years, I have read posts on this and other web sites concerning 2150 paint and the proper reducer and hardener to use. Just recently I talked to a rep from Valspar (the maker) and am passing on the following:

2150 is and has been for many years an alkyd enamel, not an acrylic enamel. Industry also refers to alkyd as synthetic enamel. The can says it is "acrylic modified", which is true, but it is still an alkyd enamel. It should be treated as such, and this means using synthetic enamel hardener and reducer. Various posts have testimony by people who have stated that they use acrylic enamel reducer and hardener. This is not recommended. The easy way to keep from having a problem is to use IH/Case reducer and the recently available hardener (part # REN-3001).

In the past, I have used a NAPA (Martin Senour) reducer product called Synthol 8005 and hardener MSE 375. Both are compatable. Also, Dupont Nason makes a synthetic hardener 483-08. I am sure there are others.

I have been using acrylic hardener and acrylic reducer with 2150 for 6+ years now and it works excellent!! Also use it in the JD green too. I know two guys that use clear coat on 2150 and JD green! Im not tring to brag but I can make 2150 look as good or better then the expensive automotive paints most guys at the pulls think I have clear coat on my tractors there suprised to hear what I use!

The finish on your tractor is directly proportional to the skill of the painter (you), as long as the components are compatible. My skill needs a lot of help, so I go by the PPG "book".

I will agree to use the IH reducer and hardener -- that's the best way to avoid problems. As to the modified acrylic, even PPG says their acrylic enamel belongs to the alkyd family. I'm not going to comment further because I have not used 2150, except to say that the major companies, ie PPG/DuPont/Sherwin Williams provide spec sheets that say, exactly, what is compatible with what. There is generally too much guess work involved with the lesser brands.

Just looked at PPG's website. They still have alkyd enamel, and a "acrylic modified alkyd enamel" which I assume is very similar to 2150. It does use a different hardener than PPG's acrylic enamel. Thus it an intermediate between alkyd enamel and acrylic enamel. PPG claims fade resistance is better than the straight alkyd. I have wondered exactly what the CIH acrylic modified is, now I have some idea, at least. So, we now have additional choices. Tractor store paint, which is straight alkyd enamel, CIH 2150 or PPG, etc., which are "upgraded" alkyd enamels, acrylic enamel, and acrylic urethane -- listed in order of quality and increasing price. I will still vote for acrylic enamel as the minimum quality, as for myself I will continue to use PPG Omni acrylic urethane--until they price it out of my range, which is getting close.

It boggles my mind that anyone would use the 2150 paint. It is 1960's technology and we have progressed so far beyond that. You guys have nylon tires on your cars" Have black and white TV? Use an icebox instead of a refrigrtator? Don't have a microwave? Don't use a cell phone? Get with the uerethanes! Or better. Gasoline won't touch em!

Sort of. Spilled gas on my newly acrylic urethane painted (about 60 days if I remember right) Super H. Tried to blot it off without rubbing, perhaps I should have let it evaporate. Damaged the paint, was able to polish 95% out, but can still see it at the right angle. I was using a plastic gas can with a spout, the bleeping spout popped out. Never again, bought the old galvanized metal funnel, invented about the beginning of time, I will spill no more. Probably with uncured synthetic enamel I would not have had any paint left.

You can use the Du Pount 77S for a hardner but i als use the I H thinner with the 2150 . Now only if they would make the paint so that gasoline would not remove it when ya have a blonde day and spill a five gallon can of gas over the paint because ya sliped off the frame rail or tail gate of the pickup and did a two and half gainer where you went one way and the can went the other.
