Okay, I don't think this is the right light switch box for my M? Also I don't think it is supposed to have an hour meter? What are the brackets for on the left side of the steering column? Lastly, the little push bar that goes through the steering column to the start button doesn't line up worth a hoot, so I have to bend over and push the start button by hand. Anything that I could do to fix that?

Nathan, Nice looking M. Could be that last guy forgot about the tree limb when he backed up and tweaked your steering column with the umbrella. Might try loosening three bottom bolts and rotating to the left just a little.Also a thin washer on front two bolts between column and trans cover might bring everyone back into alignment.

Actually the little push rod lines up well left and right it just points down a little to far and doesn't match up with the button squarely.

I think Harold has it right, the starter button is probably aftermarket and not as long as the stock one. If the starter button just stuck out a little farther it would match up perfect.

Hopefully, the nice foot starter pedal that I got from Nebraska Cowman will work even with the shorter starter button.

Nathan, The switch box is correct, but the lid is upside down. Teh amp gauge goes on top, and the switch goes to the bottom. Easy correction. The two brackets to the left are umbrella brackets. They look to be IH, so that is a plus if you ever dedide to mount an umbrella. The pin in the post is correct for early model M"s, although there is an engagement assembly that is a lever which is much easier to operate. I believe that hour meters were offered as an accessory, and that does make your tractor unique. The wiring tho seems to be haphazard, perhaps an alternator added? It looks like you have a decent M to work with. I"d like to see more pics, and of course a pic when you are finished.

Thanks for all the replies. The tractor has been upgraded (or downgraded for the collector folks!) to a 12v system and that will be fun to sort out when I get ready to put the lights on.

I've got a light bar and some brackets coming in from Nebraska Cowman and have bought some old lights on ebay but am not sure yet if I will hook the old lights up or just buy some new ones at the local tractor supply store. But I will end up having to pull the light box apart when I wire them up regardless and I'll see about putting it back together right side up this time.

My M is a 45 year model based on the serial number.

I thank the guy that drilled the hole through the post wasn't holding his mouth just right. I have the bracket to move my starter button up the post but I like that idea better. And the bracket to the left of the lite switch is a cup holder, this was just another first for Farmall. but now the JD folks will disagree.

I have used those brackets as a cup holder!

They fit a 20oz bottle of diet coke perfect, you just have to make sure the lid is on good when you turn it upside down and put it in the holder! ;-)

They fit water bottles good too!

A cup holder? Will ya quit foolin' around?!

I'm sure those brackets were designed to hold the GPS system and the lower gauge is, more likely than not, an altimeter. :>)

Seriously, someone really did a number on that switch box.

Mornin Allan, I think you may be right about the GPS system. I didn't know that Farmall ever drilled and added the pin to make it easy to push that dang starter button. I start my H standing in front of the right rear tire, never have liked doing that, I'll rig my H like Nathan's today. Sure glad Nathan posted the picture.

Allan, My H is a 42, the button is in the same place as Nathans M. I have a 52 H that has the bracket like yours. The 52 is my parts tractor, so I was gonna swap the bracket over. I like the idea of pushing the button with my foot though. That is if the shift is not in the way. I have nerve damage from a busted up back, and the right foot won't tilt left to push the dang button.

The starter foot pedal i sent you should fix your troubles but yes, you will have to drill a hole in the upright for it.

Well, I got everything hooked up except the foot pedal isn't going to work. :-/

The starter button is to far from the post and the pedal just doesn't reach far enough. Either I need to replace the starter button with a longer one or something.

I guess I could redrill the hole for the current push rod type starter thingy and get to to match up maybe.

Your box is on the correct side of post. Box is not upside down, but the cover is. The starter rod is correct for an M, the foot pedal was an option or was on later tractors. The hour meter was offered by IH as an option.But I've never seen one mounted like yours, yours looks much neater.

Other then the box being upside down it looks like all the one that i have seen and the hour meter was installed by someone and the bracket on the side of the steering support is for and umbrella and starter rod most of them are not on center now i am not sure if they came from the factory like that or it was a fiel installed thing as i was a bit young back then and the vary first M that i was on was a S/MTA that was out on demo back in 54 it had all the bells amd whistles on her and feel in love. But then i have had several love affairs over a good tractor.

if i'm right the light box should be on the other side, i forget what it is like on my M, also it is up side down, the gauge should be at the top and the switch at the bottom. Someone must have put an hour gauge in, handy to have i think, and there should be a foot switch for the starter, not that rigged up thing. I could be totally wrong about everything, i'm tired!

There is a foot switch availabe for the starter button...usually find one on ebay...nice lookin 'M'...Good luck...Dixieland

The light box looks correct. The hour meter is a add on. Might be IHC accessory or aftermarket. The clamp on the steering post looks like a umbreller clamp. Your rod to the starter button might be bent or , more likely, the starter button might be aftermarket (as it looks like it might be a little short). The original was longer which made it clooser to the post and the rod would not jump past it.

I thought the lightbox on the M was supposed to have the ampmeter on the bottom and the control knob on the top? I guess maybe they just mounted the ampmeter in there upside down so they mounted the entire box upside down?

Nathan, what year is your M? I have two 41 Hs and one has the starter exactly like yours. Even lines up just like yours. The other one has a little box with the strater switch mounted in it. It's mounted up on the left side of the steering post about where your bottom umbrella bracket is. I think the little box like thingy was a later change because a neighbor had a 39 H withe the starter switch like yours. I think Harold has explained why the rod doesn't line up with the switch, never thought about it before. ken
