Best Penetrating Oil?

Well, I've got some parts to throw on my M and was going to to stop by the auto parts store and pick up some stuff and was wondering if one brand was any better than the other.

I've always just used WD-40 but have heard some people praise PB Blaster.

Is there really a difference?

Any other special tips or tricks to loosening up some rusted up bolts?

Guess it depends on what you want to penetrate! I either use Knocker loose or Jack Danials.

Ive used Freeall for the last couple years, worksmuch better than anything i've evered used. Just My .02 cents

Well I picked up some PB Blaster on the way home. A few sprays and I didn't even have to work at any of them. Everything went very smooth.

Goes a long ways and I think it is one of the better ones. Tapping with a light hammer to work it in and help loosen rust helps also.

Guy's try 2 stroke oil and brake fluid this really works good for me and it lossens things up good cheaper than pb blaster or kroil

I've used at least a dozen products, haven't found any difference. Heat always works, but heat the bolt etc. not the casting. Had a coworker in JD dealership heat a block to get a broken oil pressure sender fitting out. Got the fitting out, installed a new fitting and fired her up. Then saw oil comming through the casting, yep, cracked the block. Dealership ate the cost of switching blocks in an 8650, $$$$$$$.

I don't know about the best penetrating oil but up here in Minnesota I've seen guys[my brother] spray WD-40 on sucker minnows when there ice fishing to catch northern pike. I won't do it because I'm a better fisherman than they are. I just don't understand why they caught all the fish!!!!!

Nathan, It's six of one, half dozen of the other. whatever you use that works, won't work on the next bolt you try it on.

I am no expert and my opinion carries no more weight or value than anyone else. But, I have been told that WD40 is really a Water Displacement formula and although it has lubricant qualities it does not perform for any period of time. I used to use it on door hinges on the vehicles and I was finding that two or three days later I was hearing squeeks again. WD40 dries out quickly and is a poor choice as a lubricant. It works very well for displacing moisture..spray a wet distributor cap, wipe it off and it will fire, it is a good starting fluid and will fire a small engine when it is flooded but it does not have sustained lubricating qualities like a good petroleum based lubricant.In our shop we used a product called "MOVE_IT" which sprayed on would loosen siezed bolts overnight and we swore by it. There are lots of good penetrating products on the market but WD 40 isn't one of them in my opinion. If you are happy with it by all means use it but it has not satisfied my requirements. Mike, Maybe thats why WD-40 didn"t work so well on my hair clippers. I was using the clippers, lubed with WD-40 to trim my beard, so I would look "irrestable" to the missus. One whiff of the WD-40. and she wouldnt le me get within 50 feet of her.

I have found that plain old heat (BernzoMatic) works better than any fluids.You can spray lubes all over the bolt heads and it never seems to seep past the head.(once you get it unscrewed).When a cloud of rust dust puffs out when the heat/air gun works,you'll know that it was the heat/impact that freed it up,not the miracle spray cans.

LOL.

I didn't realize this would be about the same as asking how many brands of penetrating oils are there!

I am was going to try to swap out my temperature gauge tonight and mount up my light bar and some fun stuff like that. Gonna start on it tonight so if anything needs to soak a while I can still get it done and be using the tractor on Saturday afternoon.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I'll pick up whatever has the best advertising on the can! ;-)

Last time this came up most said PB blaster which Ive never seen nor tried.I purchased aero Kroil for $11.00 a can but for the price Ill stick to my old tried and true Liquid Wrench.Ive always had and liked it cause its the first I used as a kid.I give ample soaking time so even WD 40 seems ok to me.If its real stuck you need the heat on it anyhow.Where do guys buy PB- blaster??

Aoto Zone and Pep Boys I know.ILL use auto zone last time I went to Pep boys they had nowhere near the gasket paper selection as when they first opened and the flyer was in spanish only.I cant speak Spanish.

I agree with IRV on the Lawason penetrating oil, pricey but lwason has some real good products. I think their nuts and bolts are the best. Second to that I would say the torch for heat or removal. PB is good too....Jim

PB and Kroil are very good for loosening stuck things but WD40 wins hands down for pleasant smell.

If it doesn"t smell good, what good is it as a penetrating oil. Wouldnt be a bad idea if it tasted good also. A couple weeks ago, I went to trim my beard, and was out of clipper oil, so I used WD-40. The Missus thought I"d lost my mind. Apparently, she doesnt think WD-40 smells as good as I do.

Depends on what your doing I use PB, WD and tranny fluid depending on what it is and how long it can sit. I like tranny fluid best, it costs about 1/4 of the others and works well on most parts.

The best I've found for rusted nuts and bolts (and valve stems, which is where I mostly use it) is Kroil. It's high, but it doesn't take much. Smells even better than WD-40, too. WD-40 is the best for cleaning your hands, though.

I have had good success with the PB BLASTER after cleaning with a wire brush first toget it clean and letting the blaster soak a while.
