I'm in the process of replaceing my old battery cables on my old "new" H. I noticed that the + ground cable goes from the battery to a bolt that mounts the starter. Just wondering if thats a bad place to ground at? Since the - cable runs to the starter also. There is other bolts on the frame or on the cast I could ground to if you think they would be any better. I don't have another H I can look off of to see how the set up is on it. The tractor came with a dead 12v in it and I put a new 6v in but it will just make it grunt a little. My cables are very old and small. I picked up some 0 cable to replace them with. If none of this helps you will be seeing more from me.

Paul, after you replace the cables if it still doesn't turn over right it might be a badly worn starter button. It should not get hot to the touch when starting.Had one that got hot for years and thought it was the nature of the brute.Read about that problem here on the Forum,Replaced the switch and got a pleasant surprise AND a fast starting 6 volt. Good Luck,Chris in SeMo.

Grounding the battery right at the starter is an excellent way to deliver full battery voltage to the starter. It eliminates several points that could cause a voltage drop during cranking.

If that #0 cable with a new, fully charged battery doesn't spin it, you may have a problem in the starter itself.

Paul, The H manual shows the battery ground cable under the upper left starter mount bolt.

The thing that you are going to need to check is if the entire electrical system was converted to 12v or is it still 6v (ie. why did it have a 12v battery?). If 6v then why is it negative ground instead of the original positive ground. If it has a ballast resistor or a 12v coil then it has been converted to 12v. You may want to get either the original H wiring diagram or look at the 12v conversion diagram that Bob M did such an excellent job drawing.

It is still pos ground. And it has a generator not an alt. I can't find a resistor in the line to the coil. So I think he just dumped a 12v battery in it instead of looking to see why it didn't want to spin on 6v. I'm just starting on the electric system and thought I would start with the cables. I noticed yesterday when I started it. Or should I say jumped it, I notice a little popping sound after it started and saw a small flame shoot out of the stack a time or two. I reved it up then back to idel and it went away. The timeing may be a little off and I'm sure it could stand to have the valves adjusted also. Look for lot's of questions from me.

Hi Paul, I would ground that battery on the frame. Remove any paint or rust since they make good insulators. The original 6 volt battery used a positive ground too. Tractor owners seem to forget doing a tuneup on their tractors. They will start a lot easier when this done. Hal

Grounding to bolt on starter is just fine ,thats what mine is.Think you will see a big difference with the 0 cables now with the 6 volt
