M clutch question

I just bolted the block back up to the clutch housing. I hooked up the clutch linkage and it does not feel right. There is a lot of pedal travel before the throwout engages the clutch. Then the clutch does not release before the pedal bottoms out. I unhooked the pedal and used a cheater on the clutch lever and it released just fine.

It's a completely new clutch. Do I just need to lengthen the rod to the pedal? is there some internal adjustment to be made?

I don't want to put the block together anymore until I get this straightened out in case I have to pull it back apart. I can drop the belly pump and get to it if I need to, I guess.

It could be that the throwout fingers are misadjusted. There should be adjuster nuts on the clutch cover. Usually they are staked so they don't turn by themselves. What it comes down to is that the throwout fingers should be a certain distance from the flywheel when the whole thing is assembled. If they are adjusted too low, they may actually hit the clutch disc when the throwout bearing (pedal depressed) pushes them forward. I've had this happen before.

Yes the clutch linkage will have to be adjusted when you install a new clutch.

Glen - You'll need to lengthen the clutch pedal rod (pull the pin from the clevis and unscrew along the rod as req'd). Lengthen it until there's about 1" of free movement at the pedal before the throwout engages the clutch fingers.
