Why you in a hurry to get the 300 going? Got to use it to milk a cow?
I see it has a petcock on the intake so I just had to ask.

PS why the new carb?

Is that what that is for? I was wondering why the heck would some one put that on there.

I soaked the old carb as much as I could in carb cleaner. Its so gummed up and rusty inside. COuld never get it cleaned out enough to use it.

Kelly, What alternator did you use? I am doing a valve job on my 240 Utility and was thinking of making the switch to 12V. Where did you get a wiring diaghram? Thanks

Gosh I cant remember what one it is. I got mine from SWR for $75 for the kit. But I think it is just a standard GM alt. Could get one from the junk yard for $10. Jossette set me this diagram yesterday. Pretty good one.

You might look into a marine alternator. They use an internal regulator and have only one wire to connect to the battery through the ammeter. An ignition ballast resister for a '78 or so dodge pickup can be put on the hot side of the coil to save having to change or modify the ignition. I'd also see about getting a set of manuals from binderbooks. They are a bit pricey but I believe well worth the money.

i would go with the steel plug wire kit. last longer than the carbon and they fit like a glove

if you live in the cold--now would be the best time to put in a tank heater

The diode is to prevent the #1 aux terminal on the alternator from backfeeding the ignition coil when you turn off the ignition switch. Without the diode the engine will not shut down when you turn off the ignition.

Alternatively you can substitute a small lamp rated at 200 ma or so (or an equivalent series resistance) for the diode. This will limit the backflow current to less than that required to fire the coil. And the lamp will light if the alternator is not charging while the ignition is on - same as the dash idiot light on your car/truck.
