Nice pictures carl. For anyone that doesnt know those pictures are just the tip of the iceberg. This was a huge plant. I believe it built all of IH's tillage equipment untill it was closed up and everything went to hamilton. It also built MANY other things. They said the canton plant turned the world, and in many ways they were right. Started as the P&O plow company so long ago and starting with single bottom horse draw plows and going all the way to those 800 series flex plows all in the same place. This plant did burn a few years ago as they said, and if anyone had some pictures of that, they are very impressive. Paid and volunteer departments from 20 or more miles were on the scence to try to stop the fire from racing into the old down town area of canton. The factory is almost completely gone now. The big elevator tower seen just left of center in the first picture was one of two and could been seen for miles but even they are gone now. They survived the fire and a couple of demolition attemps but eventually came tumbling down. John Deere built the first plow in Grand Detour but Canton Illinois is where it was perfected, in my opinion, of course.

A lot of the tillage equipment came from Canton. However, Hamilton built a lot while Canton was running, as did Chattanooga. Harvester acquired both P&O and Chattanooga the same year.

Many plows were built before John Deere built one. In fact, he was preceeded by 4 years on the steel bottom plow by a farmer named John Lane, near Joliet, Illinois.

Used to live in Canton-Drove by there everyday and knew a lot of people who worked there. It"s all gone now-burnt some years ago from a bankrupt tire recycler that was using part of the plant. Estimate at the time was there were over a million used tires piled inside the gates of the plant. It was quite a blaze as you can imagine.

I'm not sure exactly where you're going with the pictures and comment, but my first impression was that we should all miss IH and the United States manufacturing capability. Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but I think we gave up a national treasure.
