very hard starting 606 diesel

I bought a nice 606 diesel a month and a half ago, and have gone through it to replace all the basic stuff (hy-tran, air filter, hydraulic filter, 2 bad glow plugs, fresh 30w oil, oil filter, diesel fuel additive) and even a 900CCA Exide battery and 1000W block heater. It is still very stubborn starting. About every other time I try to start it, I can grind the big Exide battery dead. When it does start, it sounds great and has lots of power. Where do I go from here? Thanks!

I bought a 560 Diesel once that the only way it would start below 35 degrees F was with a log chain and an M in front of it. Darn frustrating when you have a mounted corn picker on it.

That winter I pulled the engine and TA down. I had the injector pump checked, injectors checked, glow plugs tested out of the tractor, and the starter rebuilt. When we got to the head it was in bad shape. The valve seats were way below the surface of the head. My machine shop knows what I want and did the valve seats, guides, and valves back up to original factory spec. Put in new sleeves and pistons etc. One day the tractor was sitting outside and the temp was -15 F. It started after some cranking and I was wondering why. When I unplugged the engine heater, the hoses were stone cold; the heater had not been working.

Any/all of the above can make it a hard starter. I attributed mine to the poor compression due to the severely worn valve seats. I base this on the fact that it has about 4000 hours on the overhaul and nothing has been worked on since and it will still start on just the glow plugs down to at least 0 F.

Thanks for the feedback. I gave in and had my local dealer test the compression, and all cylinders are below 200 (factory spec is 350 psi). All injectors are below spec, and there were 2 more bad glow plugs in addition to the 2 I found. This really suprised me because the tractor appears to have been well kept, and the "working" hour meter is only 3300 hours. The head hasn't come off so I don't know what the valves or cylinder walls look like. Can I put any life back in the tractor for less than $1000? I really appreciate the advice.

I would say that depends on if you can do the work yourself. I'd suggest checking on what a sleeve and piston set would cost, and what a machine shop would charge to put in all the valve seats. This would be a worst case, so you can go from there by adding the cost of the injectors and glow plugs.

Fixing up an engine can be a tough call. If you use a tractor a lot and want it to dependably start, you probably will want to either fix this one and know what you have or try to buy another one. Personally, I would fix it and know what I have, but...I can do all the work (except the valve seats) my self which makes a big difference.

This might be a good place to ask how you checked the glow plugs. No one agrees with me but I have sean it to many times to ever forget. Can't be sure about the glow plugs with out taking them out and look at the tip. They can show current draw but not get hot enough to do the job.

You got some good advice, but I would go with Jimmy King , folks up the road could never start their 1830 John Deere, finally got the starter looked at and now it starts. I have a little diesel that I have to hold the glow plugs on and count to thirty real slow before I hit the starter(in cold weather), I believe in injector cleaner and use it in all my diesels, if those tips are clean it makes starting a lot easier.Example, I bought this little diesel that had been neglected, had to use ether to start it even in the summer time, poured the injector cleaner to it and worked it for a few tanks and the starting just kept getting easier and easier, not to mention the performance and fuel consumption. Never use ether, even in the winter I can start it with the glow plugs. It sounds like a starter turning too slowly and eating your battery, but these other things will help a lot...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

How long do you hold the glow plugs on before trying to start? Might need at least 90 seconds in cold temps. 15 seconds minimum on a hot July day. Might not be a bad idea to have the injection pump checked over.

Take your starter to a good starter and Generator shop and have it checked out. My 460 was hard to start for years then had starter rebuilt and it was a different tractor when starting after that.

timing of the fuel pump maybe off a degree or even the static timing is off.
