My 300U had a slipping TA this winter, however today I used it to clear out some of the remaining snow/ice around some of the buildings and tried the TA and guess what....it didnt slip.I even was able to run up into 3rd gear for short distances with no slippage/stopage.Even when driving into a snow/ice pile it didnt slip.I still say the ancient tranny fluid has something to do with this(hopefully I will change that before next winter).Warm weather = a TA that the sprags/rollers work better in.Cold weather=a slipping TA.

Dad bought a 350 new and about 3 yrs later the TA started slipping a little. He talked to the dealerm, who told him to change the Hy-Tran every year. He changed it and solved the problem. Never had anymore problemwith it for years, and we used it hard. Seems it spent half its life inlow range. The Hy-tran absorbs moisture and will cause problems if not changed regularly.

Hmm, maybe I should try mine again. It wasn't working when I got it, but I've adjusted the linkage and changed the tranny fluid since then. I really don't need the TA though, for anything I've used the tractor for.

Hy Tran is what is suppose to be in there now fprget what the owners manual sayes and use Hy Tran as the 30 weight 90 weight will cause a T/A to slip in the older T/A's and everything else uses the trans rear for the holding tank for the hdy. oil.

The owner's manuals for the SMTA's, 400's, and 300's with TA all recommended 30wt oil. A seasoned long time IH mechanic recalled that they started having trouble with the TA's in the winter. IH recommended several different mixtures to thin the oil for winter. They finally came up with HyTran. Don't know what the recommendations were for the 450's and 350's.

I have a 986 that has done the same thing. It was slipping is low gears pulling a mower one year, the next year, I can stall it in 8th. Can't figure it out.

Brake fluid in a trans? Brake fluid is Hygroscopic,it attracts moisture. That would add water to the trans, which would freeze in the cold and amplify TA problems. It also would cause corrosion on the internal parts.Brake fluid is nasty stuff.

I still have trouble putting HY-Tran in instead of the originally recommended motor oil...(I still shudder at the thinner viscosity/potential leakage, and lesser lubrication qualities).Sorta like putting Hy Tran in the engine instead of motor oil....
But maybe thats just false concerns...
