M running cold - replace thermostat?

Okay, I have replaced my temperature gauge and sure enough the M is running cold. (The gauge doesn't make it to the "Run" range.

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open which sounds like a common thing on these old tractors. In a car I always replaced a thermostat so the heater would work but didn't know it was bad to run an engine cold. From some of the replies I got on my temperature gauge post it sounds like replacing the thermostat is important to keep the tractor running well.

So... Just order a thermostat from my local Case/IH dealer and get the gasket with it? Any other tips or tricks? I read something about using regular grease from a grease gun to seat the gasket?

Thanks! Nathan

before you buy one, check that the one you have is not letting coolant get pass it because its loose in the housing. it must be tight vertical and horizontal. i had a loose one in a 240 and it would not warm up, i checked it in cold to boiling water and all went good. i then shimmed it tight in the housing with sone alumiunm coil stock, reinstalled snap ring and it went to operating range from then on. thermostats don't go bad that often.

Try your local automotive store such as NAPA for a replacement thermostat. You want that engine
to run somewhere around 180 degrees for the best performance and this will stop that sludge buildup that occurs in an engine along with periodic oil changes. Hal

Okay, I got the confusion sorted out on the pricing on the Thermostat. They had quoted me for an old non-pressure system thermostat that kicks in at 130 degrees. They quoted one that is for 165-190 degrees and it was only $21.21.

What do you think? Go ahead and get the genuine part or go with the $5 Autoparts type? Kinda scary that they don't sound like they know what part I need to begin with. They are going to have to order the part at Case/IH and it won't get here until next Thursday. What gasket do you use if you go with the cheap one?

Thanks, Nathan

Okay, one more thing.

Dealer said $36.92 for part # 37632-D.

That site shows part # 37634-D for $17.00.

What is the difference? Which one do I need for a 1945 M?

Thanks again. Nathan

Nathan - I"ve had Auto Zone #800-180 t"stats in both my SH and SM for several years. Looks different (shorter) than the OEM t"stat, but it fits fine and works great.

Price is under $5.
