Hi Guys,

Been around farming and red tractors since I was old enough to walk and on farms in 4 different states.

Never heard of or have I ever seen a "demonstrator" until I stumbled across this site.

Where was all this demonstrating supposed to be going on anyway? Anybody ever see a IH tractor actually being used as a demonstrator?

Allan

Allan: One of my former neighbors had a white C he bought new. He didn't keep it long, traded it for a 200 with fast hitch, which he still has. By my accounting he must be 88 years old. Not many guys still around that bought a new letter series Farmall.

That was the only one near me, but country wide they were quite common.

Allen, back in the early 60's my grandpa had a #45 baler with a wisconsin engine that would get hot and vapor lock. The local dealer had a white #46 pto driven baler that replaced the #45. It stayed white and I baled lots of hay with it and a 340 w/ta and later a 504. My grandpa did custom farming and it got a lot of use. I also have a nice "C" that I was powerwashing and discovered white paint on the underside of the torque tube and rear end. I believe that tractor came from the thumb of Mich. ...Fred

In the fall of not sure on this it was either 53 or54 durning tater harvest the I H dealer brought a white S/MTA out for demo and that is when i fell in love with the S/MTA as i got to spend the after noon running it it had power steering and all the neat stuff even a wide ft. Far better then the 88 oliver that my uncle had but he did not buy one at that time but in 59 he got the 560 in the fall and in the spring he got the 460 and a year later someone stole it he had three tractor stolen the 460 the 706 and i hate to say this but he switched colors and had the 4520 leave in the middel of the nite off the one farm.

I've owned a WHITE plastic toy W-9 for the past 50 years, and often wondered what little kid would want to play with a non-red IHC product!

They might not have been called demonstrators by IH, I don't know. The white tractors were part of IH's "mid-century promotion", or however it was worded. They were actually demonstrators, and were supposed to be painted red before final sale, not all were. White was supposed to stand out in the farmers field, arousing curiousity, thus selling more tractors. I don't like the appearance of the white tractors, to me a Farmall is not a Farmall unless it is red -- BUT, they also had gold demo's (combination of gold and red), unlke the white ones, these were nice looking tractors, and other promotions in the 60's and 70's, I know nothing about those.

Local retired fellow tells of when he was a teenager he worked for IHC dealer in Glenwood, IA. One spring (early 50's?) his job was to drive a Farmall C with mounted plow around the country and join in where ever he found a farmer plowing. He wasn't supposed to 'spend the day' but just demonstrate the advantages of modern equipment. He had a ball. My nickel Dick Davis
