Some of you folks may have been following what I have been trying to do. Which is trying to save/rescue some of the old tractors that have been bought to be sold for scrap metal. I resently bought a 300 LP, and drove it to my place. I was called last night about a Farmall M with a WFE. My wife and I went to look at it this evening, but it turned out to be, what I believe, a SMTA on LP. The serial tag was not readable, and all the sheet metal had surafce rust so I could not make out any model letter. But it has a TA, IPTO, remote control hydraulics, home made front end loader and a heavy duty wide front end (in excellent tight condition). I believe it to be an original Farmnall IH type. The motor is stuck, but I was able to buy it anyway. He also had picked up 2- Farmall H's, so I made a deal with him to buy all three and he is going to deliver them to my place. I have had a lot of contact from folks, and even though I really did not want to become a part time old tractor used parts guy, it seems folks are more interested in parts, than whole tractors. So I guess I will part out some, especially ones with stuck motors. It sure is starting to take a LOT of time and money, but I really believe it is important to get them away from the scap metal dealers, so I will do what I can for a while, and see what happens. And yeah, I am "FOR REAL"

I found a picture of a SMTA LP online. The one I found is a bit more rusted but otherwise looks identical. The white decal for the SM w/ torque amplifier is noticeable on the one I found.

Anything in particular I should look for to see if it is the real deal?

One of the reasons I ended up with my current M was because it ran on gas and not LP which is a rare thing around these parts (most of the old farm tractors around here are LP).

Is this something I should look into picking up and trying to trade for something I would use?

Thanks, Nathan

Just saw this picture that Nathan posted. The SMTA that I bought looks just like this one, but with more rust and the mason jar pre-cleaner. Same looking forward/aft mounted LP tank. Does anyone know if this is what the factory installed LP sysytem looks like? The system on the SMTA I bought is marked "ENSIGN".

Mark, The SMTA-LP has an Ensign Lp system. So you are N/NE of Big D. When you get it home let me know what your are going to do with it. What youe want? etc. My email is always open.
Later.

LOL, I need to remember I'm still a newbie at this. The SMTA turned out to be a 400TA on closer inspection. It was a LP and had the tank mounted just like the SMTA does though!

Decent shape but some holes cut in the hood for some reason. Factory 3pt.

Oh well, thought it was a rare one.

Here's a pic of the 400 LP. I guess it is hard to tell what model it is driving by on the highway.

Nathan. I thought you told me it was a WFE?? The 400 is still a great tractor. I bought a 300 LP and a 400 LP today from the same fellow that had the SMTA. They were hiding behind his barn. I asked him why he did not tell me he had them the other day. His answer was: "How many of those old tractors do you need"?? I told him it is not need, but WANT! We got a good laugh out of it, so now I own all three LP's, and the two H's. Will get pictures of the SMTA ASAP and post them for all.

Sorry for the confusion. The tractor here local is a 400 LP with WFE. The pic I posted above was just a 400 LP that I found online.

I read up on the 400 and I guess they are a pretty good tractor. Really for the price the guy is asking it sounds like a good deal still, I'm just not sure about the LP. I like to be able to just pick up a couple buckets of gas and be done with it.

I will take some pics of the 400 LP that is here locally tomorrow.

Sorry for the confusion.

Nathan

Nathan. Sorry I jumped the gun, about the WFE thing. Where are you finding the pictures? I would like to find out how hard to find/rare the SMTA LP is. After all the old Farmalls I have saved, this one might be the one to keep and take the time to restore. You folks might not believe me, but I have owned another SMTA LP. It was about three years ago. One of the first ones i bought/saved. A fellow from AZ bought it, had it hauled from here (Texas). I found out later it had been sold a few more times after that. At the time I did not think much about it... Thanks!

Kinda odd.

I bought my M about 3 weeks ago. Since then I've spent quite a bit of time on this board and suddenly I actually notice the old rusted tractors parked next to old farm buildings instead of just driving right by them.

Well, I think there is a SMTA LP with WFE about 2 miles from my house. Looks to be in decent shape with straight tin and everything but a bit on the rusty side. No idea if it runs or not.

I'm gonna try to check it out and get some pictures of it this week.

Nathan

Nathan, that's how it is done. You have to take the time to see if you can them out of pastures, out of the hands of scrap metal dealers, and get them out in the market, before they are gone forever.

Mark, Where are you located. There may be some one who is instreded in it. A True SMTA-LP are rare. Only 500were ever built! ! ! It if it is one of them I wouldn't part it out, for that reason alone.
Can you post a pic of it where we can see it. Some of us here can tell you if it is a factory rig or not..
Hollar back if you want. Later,
John A.

John A.. It is in a field WAY off the road. The fellow that I bought it, and the two H's, from is going to move it up by his fence in the next few days. I am going to try to make a deal with him to move all three to my place about 25 miles from him. It has the Ensign type system, with a large LP tank going front to back. It will be at least until this weekend before I can take any pictures and get them posted. I will bring my digital camera with me from now on.

I will try to keep it whole. I prefer not to have to part them out. I spend a lot of time and effort getting these old tractors out in the market. It might even have power steering??

tractor vet..It takes a lot of getting the word out, and making the time to go and investigate these sightings of the old iron. I have been out there from 5:00AM-9:00PM and later, with flashlights, to see them. Just trying to make the deals with these guys in a pain in the butt. I get asked more than once: "what do you want with that old junk". Some times I wonder myself. Then all of a sudden the value goes up.
