I bought a tumble plow last year and I'm trying to use it. I'm having trouble with the settings. I know how to time it I found that out, But how do you set the depth, and how do the two stops work on each wheel. Are there any books for sale or can someone email some pages out of a book. Thanks in advance. Tim in Nebraska.

Tim I have a model 39 16" IH tumble bug. I have plowed thousands of acres with one. The crank at each wheel is how you control the depth. To first set you plow for level depth crank both sides clear in to the stops. Then back them out starting at around 15 turns each. Go make a couple rounds and check the depth your plowing. If its to deep crank each crank the same amount in. If not deep enough crank the out. Now once you have your depth where you want it check to see of furrows are nice and level. If not you might have to adjust one side up or down a little. There are two stop latches on frame that latch the tongue in position so your first plow does not cut to much or to little. You can adjust these to the precise cut. Everytime you trip the plow and bring it out of the ground this latch will unlatch and let the tongue off set for the other direction. This is a very neat plow and fun to plow with.

I don't remember just how but I know you adjust it with the cranks on each wheel. Also you have to have the little plow in sink with the actual plow. Binder Books has a manual for the 39 tumble plow.

Tim: The model number is 39, you didn't say if you knew that. I do know a guy that has a completely restored and operational 39 complete with manuals.

He may chime in here, he does monitor this site some, never has much to say, unless I give some wrong information on plows. That should get him fired up. If you don't find out send me an e mail, I can put you in touch with him. I have seen his plowing with 39, thus can vouch for him. He knows what he is doing.

Mornin' Tim,

Darnit! Been rackin' my brain trying to remember; the last time I was in front of one of those plows was in the spring of '63, just two days before I left for the Navy.

All I remember was that the little JD 2010 wouldn't pull the goofy thing in heavy ground. :>(

Depth has got to be controlled by the wheel drop, doesn't it? It is the only thing holdin' 'er out of the ground.

And also, the plow would have to be leveled out by the landside wheel-carry as well? Those two cranks don't adjust the two drops?

Maybe Cowman will jump in here and help; he runs a Plow-Day every year and has no doubt run across 'em a lot.

Allan
