400 LP - Worth buying?

Well, I'm very happy with my M that I bought all of 3 weeks ago. It runs on gas and has been an awesome tractor so far. Since I bought it I have been noticing several old tractors sitting around that have probably been there for many years but I've never noticed them before.

One is 2 miles from my house and is a 400 LP. It's not in the best shape and I found out who owned it and the guy wants $1,200 for it. Says it runs but there is no battery and it hasn't moved in at least a year. Not really rusted very bad, mostly just faded out but has some hydraulic oil leaks and some chunks cut out of the hood.

I took some pics of it:

I'm really not an LP fan so I don't think I would want to keep it. What I was wondering about is what parts off of this would fit my M? Could I swap out the front end and if so would it be a bolt on or take other modifications? Is a 400 a better tractor than my M and I should think about upgrading? My M is in good shape and has an aftermarket 3 pt hitch on it.

Oh well, anyone else looking for a 400 LP that wants it I'll work something out for you.

Thanks for any advice. Nathan

I think $1200 is high for a non running tractor let alone an LP. That front end is a Swartz and is much better than the Factory IH imho. The tractor migh have some good points as the motor if not stuck will have much less wear on it being an LP and the fast hitch is cool. You can also convert it over to gas no problem using the same tank and getting a carb.

Thatīs the factory LP set up, but that fast hitch isnīt like the one we had on our 400LP.

Hi Nathan, I've been looking for an excuse to talk to a fellow Texan. I know, I know. Don't call you a fellow. :-)
I'm real happy with my 400LP. All the LP valves needed to be replaced. I have two batteries hooked up to mine. The one under the seat and one in front of the belt gearbox. I wanted to replace the cables before I paid for it because he said it started well with a short pull. I wanted to see it start with a key. It's a narrow front but I still wanted to bring the wheels in so it would turn better.
I'll try to leave you a picture of it. But it should still be in Tractor Photos. I paid $2500 for mine but I was able to drive it home and it is my only tractor.

Nathan:
$1,200 US Dollars seems a bit much with the hood all cut up, not currently running and looks like it will need at least 1 rear tire soon.
Just my opinion.

Jeff

The 400 is the next generation after the super mta. It is still basically an M, so quite a few of the parts will interchange readily with your M. That wide front should be a direct swap. I think maybe the $1200 dollar price might be a little steep for the condition it is in, but maybe not.

Yeah, I went from thinking I was on to a rare SMTA LP to realizing it was a common 400 LP that just isn't in very good shape.

I was thinking I might offer $800 or something like that and then I could justify buying it. Otherwise I think I'm gonna just pass on it.

I'm really happy with my M and don't need another tractor but I have a hard time passing up good deals. ;-)

I would go with what the Cowman said to offer. He may take it. Hal

I'd offer $600 cold hard cash. The propane setup is not factory and neither is the wide front. Wonder if they put a high compression head on it?

The propane tank has a bunch of serial numbers and stuff on it. I thought a company out of Lubbock was hired to put the propane tanks on the SMTA's and it is stamped Lubbock. That is one thing that is kind of interesting to me because I'm in Lubbock.

How can you tell the WFE is not factory? Looks like there wouldn't be much to swap out with my M if it wasn't a factory WFE and I'm starting to like my narrow one anyway.

I guess I would be buying this to fix up and get in decent shape and sell as a useable tractor because there isn't anything collectible on it that I can see. No lights, nearly everything is cut up or welded or rigged. I may just save myself the hassle and walk away from it.

Thanks for the advice.

Maybe it is a factory tank, could be, but it looks like the cut hood was homemade. Like it was added later

The LP bits are factory. You can see the "LP Gas" emblem on the left hood. ALL lp tanks have some sort of label on them. Most tractors have a tag like this one. The serial tag should have a code on it as to whether the bellhousing was originally LP.

The WF is aftermarket though. Easy way to tell here is the angle iron center pivot.

Looking around it looks like the propane tank is factory. Here is a pic from Tom's Antique Tractor site that looks pretty much identical.

Nathan, I think I would scuff my tow around in the dirt a little bit, and then ask him if he would take $800.00 cash. Personally I would go $1000.00 no sweat for it. Then I would rebuild the tractor. You would have a bigger framed and heavier tractor, fast hitch, live power, IPTO, and an all around newer tractor than the M. Both of mine are M"s but there are times when IPTO would be nice. It wouldn"t take very much at all to make that old girl look good again. You could always try the LP system, and if you didn"t like it, you could either go here or ebay and get the hood and gas tank and carb and switch it over to gas. This tractor had the next generation bigger motor than the plain M, and you could get a lot more tractor for not much more than an M sould cost. JMHO, Harley
