Ever buy a Farmall Tractor you wished you had never seen? I did sold a Farmall 560 standard to buy a 706 row crop. Gave the 560 away, bought the 706 at a sale supposed to be in good condition, looked good sounded ok! Gave $4800.00 got it home put it in the field after new tires were put on, 3point didn't work right, fixed , went back to field TA went out fixed that, lights shorted out , gas bowl leaked, Then the engine went bang! Bought a used engine out of a 806 supposed to be good got it in, it was shot. Seller said it was a used engine sorry! So had the block rebored, bought new piston set, new ring set, all new bearings,Head reworked, used clutch, pto drive shaft, seals and gaskets sets,and on and on $6000.00 dollars later it still in the shop and its spring if I could trade it back for the 560 I would jump for joy! No more 706's for me.

Sorry to here about your bad luck. I always figure everything is junk until I prove it different. I just bought a 706 and hope I have better luck than you.

Sounds like ya don't have a vary good 706 mechanic. and if the block was good in the old engine i would have never made the swap i just don't care for a working engine that does not have sleeves , and i have bought a bunch of 706's and untill i check them out they all have bad T/A's and i by them as such just knowen that i'll have to do it . Bought and 826 at a sale and they called it to have a GOOD T/A got it home run it off the trailer and down the road turned around at the bottom of the hill and come up the hill as hard as it would run and started standing on the brakes pulled it down to about 12-1400 and pulled the stick back and darn near went over the steering wheel the low side was out called the auctioneer and told him and he was upset and asked if i wanted to bring it back or just get it fixed her and send him the bill so i fixed it and sent him the bill he was shocked that it did not come close to what a dealer would charge.

Old,

Been where you are and know the feeling.

But, look at it this way. It isn't the tractor's fault. It was not a lemon. It had the misfortune of having 40 years of rough life in the wrong hands.

Now that you own the tractor, it probably thinks it is in tractor heaven.

Not everyone treats them as we do, sorry to say. Don't condemn the tractor because some other human turned it into a "lemon".

Allan

706/806 were two of the best IH tractors. But, you bought a well used 706, all used tractors have problems, unless you know the previous owner, how it was used and how it was maintained.

Sorry to hear about your trouble with your 706. Everyone gets a lemon at least once. I know several people who bought 706's and have had good luck with theirs. On the other hand I know a few who have not had very good luck. Most of the ones that had trouble were beaten and abused by their previous owners. Look at it this way, there shouldn't be much of anything left to go wrong!

Old;

Bought 3, sold the wrong one and fixed the other two. Fixed the M and the 300,sold the 656 for about half of what I had in it.

Some people really abuse their tractors. Sometimes it is somewhat difficult to determine what is wrong. Or there are more problems then you think.

The best buy I made was a used 706 ger.diesel. Had to have some hyd.work done and hired a kid to cultivate corn and he abused the TA which was going anyway.
