Hi again,

Is there any way for me to tell if the PTO clutch discs on my IH 1066 are messed without cracking the tractor open? If I can't tell without opening the old girl up then what would I open up and how much trouble is the job going to be? PTO clutch disks don't seem to cost very much but I have a notion that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Any suggestions? Thx., Mitch.

Thank ALL of you, JJK, the tractor vet and Dennis Guage for the info. This looks like something I had better let a pro tackle. Having never owned a tractor or having even seen the inside of one I guess it would be better for me to watch this time. Heck, I just might even learn something. Thanks again, Mitch.

If you decide to do this yourself make sure when you get the clutch pack that you get 7 fiber and 9 steel discs. As you lay them in it starts out with 2 steel on the bottom and then every other after that. You can get by without taking the whole pto apart but then you don't know the condition of anything else. Thats a chance you'll have to decide to take. When the pto goes back in make sure that the shaft inside is still in place before you slide the pto in. Adjusting the pressure I like to get it between 260 and 300 psi(closer to 300). Best to park the tractor down a ditch to get the oil to go forward so you don't need to drain it. This job usually takes me a little over 2 hrs, complete pto rebuild, in and out of tractor, but then I have all the tools and know how to do it.

First thing is GET A BOOK or you will screw up the pick up tube if ya don't know what your doing . And you will need to make up a spring compressor to get in past the clutch pack and a special fitting and a gauge that will read up to 600 lbs to set pressure when you put it back in . Now that will get you into and fix it or find someone that has done this before and have them do it . Takes me about three hours to drain rebuild put back in refill and set pressure .

The PTO unit can be removed from the tractor without splitting it open, but you either have to park it facing down a steep hill, or drain the transmission.

You can pretty much bank on something serious being wrong if the PTO don't work, and the normal external adjustments don't help.
