Splitting a 5288

5288 needs a complete overhaul. I don't have any books/manuals for this tractor yet, but where do you split this tractor? I see between the transmission housing and the front motor frame rails is sandwiched a plate of some kind. Do I split before/in front of the plate or does the plate go with the motor? Any special tricks or secrets to know before I separate this animal? I assume that there will be at least a torsional dampener attached to the flywheel splined to the trans. input shaft. If so, how does one get that to line up again when putting back together? I generally work on Olivers and Whites, so splitting a tractor is new territory.

If your pulling the crank the motor has to come out. I assume that the crank must need to be turned or cracked that your taking it out. Check the cam lift as long as your there to make sure its in spec. SRC through Case IH has rebuild engines that can be put in if there is to much that needs to be replaced on your motor. You would have to check on the price but it seems to me that it was about 4300 to 4500 for a rebuild with warranty. The flex plate centers itself in the flywheel so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Just check it for wear.

WFE, give me a call or email, and I could come help you some night after work. Its easy to do once you've done it a few times.

The plate you are talking about is the rear motor adapter plate and is bolted to the rear of the motor. If you split it leave in a couple of bolts to hold up the rear of the motor. Is there a reason that you are splitting it? Unless the block has to have work done on it, it all can be done in frame.

Block is fine, but I have to get crankshaft out and had assumed that I would need to move engine forward in order to uncouple it from the tractor driveline in order to remove crank. Are you saying that the crankshaft can be pulled without moving the motor at all relative to the rest of the tractor chassis? If so, plaudits to the IH engineers on a brilliant design!
