Does anyone know if the engine from a UD-9 power unit was used in a tractor? It is one of the Farmall start on gas switch to diesel engines. Currently it is attached a water pump but I'm trying to figure out if it would have enough power to run my sawmill.

Bill - That's the same 335 cubic inch diesel that powers the WD-9 wheel tractor and the TD-9 crawler. If I recall it's rated about 65 Hp at the flywheel.

Hey Guys, I think I saw one this weekend derelict in the corner of some field. It was attached to an irrigation well and a huge diesel tank. It obviously has not run in quite a while. It is on a two-wheel trailer, sunk in the ground.

The big question, is it worth rescuing and restoring?

JG

John - I guess it depends on it's condition and what you plan to do with it. Parts can be hard to find, and can be very expensive. And if not operated properly these engines were prone to head cracking and valve problems.

So unless it's known to be in good running condition, or you have lots of time and $$$$, restoring can be a costly adventure. On the other hand the UD-9 can make for an unusual and fascinating display of first generation diesel technology.

Punch below for a shot of a UD-18 (a 6 cylinder "big brother" to the UD-9) belonging to a friend. He displays/runs this beauty every summer.

Thanks for the replies. It is probably big enough to run the mill in smaller stuff, but that UD-18 would be the real ticket. I have a big cummins that came with the mill when I bought it but I thought it would be cool to have an IH power unit also. I think I can get it for a couple hundred bucks so I may give it a try.

Yep, WD-9 and TD-9 tractors. Around 55 horsepower, give or take a few.
