SA finally finished

Well, against all odds I finally finished my 49 SA restoration. I could not have done it(would not have done it)without the help and enthusiasm of the people on this board. Only glitch is a leaking steering assembly. Looks like the previous owner had fitted it with a zirc and filled with grease. At this point I think I will run it with grease for the season, looks like a pretty involved process to replace the seal(lower at steering arm)any comments? Ill post some pics as soon as I am able. Thanks again!!

Mike: I can't bring up your photo, however I'd stay with grease in that steering box. If in 2005 you can stop one of those steering boxes from leaking gear oil, you are one smart man. If you keep it stopped from leaking, you will be ready to enter the clergy. You may not have the words in order, but you will have used them all.

I have 3 of those offsets all with grease zerks and grease in box. Key to success with it is have box full of grease so new grease added has to go to gears. With gear oil, I've been there and done that, and have used a few four letter words. I don't normally use those.

That zerk is grease for the top bearing. The worm and gear and lower shaft are to run in 90wt. There is a bushing and seal on lower shaft and a seal and bushing for the steering shaft. Also gaskets between the top and bottom. I have rebuilt several of them with great success just some work to take axle loose and then removing the bottom half.

Looks pretty good, Mike. If it was mine, I"d just keep running grease. Thousands of smaller Farmalls are running the same way.

Thanks for the post of the pic, I am going to have to go back to the drawing board, made a couple attempts at posting from tractor pics on this site, did eventually get a box with an x in it to show up. Guess that could be considered progress? Thanks

Hi Mike, Glad to hear the good news! When I rebuilt the frontend on my 49 Super A, I had the frontend off and then took the steeringbox off and rebuilt that also. Its not a bad job. Glad to hear you finally finished her up. Im half way done on mine. Everything is done back to the touchcontrol. I will be needin a new grill assembly also. This spring Ill do the backside of the tractor and that should be it. Good Luck with it!
