Still Oil pressure problems

I have a 61 IH 240 utility tractor. When you start it, the oil pressure is around 40 psi. or so. After it warms up, the oil pressure goes down to around 15 or 10. I have a new oil gauge in it. I was thinking about replacing the rod bearings. Or should I replace the mains instead? I really don't want to split the tractor. I have heard that they sometime only run around 10 psi or so? I am not for sure. I thought about rebuilding the oil pump, but the oil pressure doesn't come up with you rev up the engine. Any ideas? Thanks

I had the same experience as MN Charlie. Not only was the bottom warped, and gasket blown out, but one of the bolts had dropped out (and was in the bottom of the pan).

I trued up the bottom the best I could on a flat piece of steel with sandpaper on top, and checked end clearance with plastigage. I needed two of the thin paper gaskets to get the right clearance.

Now the oil pressure is much better.

Good luck,
Bill

While it will not address the root problem, you may be able to deal with it simply by raising the viscosity rating of your oil. If the tractor does not see much use, and you are reluctant to tear it down, I would give some thought to using 10-40 or more likely 20-50 oil. Simply putting in straight weight 30 will help your pressure when warms up but it is going to be harder on it on start up and cold weather and will eventually serve to make the problem worse.

While of course nothing beats the security of a rebuilt engine, I have found myself in a similiar problem to yours and I wound up using 20-50 oil and have had no more oil pressure issues. Only you can make the judgement call on how much you use it, how much time and money you are able to spend in addressing it, and how much it is really going to bother you.

I think the key is when you said that the oil pressure doesn't come up when you rev the engine. The first thing I'd check is the oil pressure relief valve.

does your tractor have a crankcase breather???
my M was pluged tight, cleaned it with diesel and let dry. she has never started with less than 70 lbs. since

I"m in the process of rebuilding a Farmall C and when I had it apart I check the oil pump out very carefully and found that the bottom cover was warped and the little thin gasket was blowen out. Remachined the cover flat and reinstalled. I had it running last night for an hour and still have good oil pressure with 10W30 oil. I need to get it hooked to the dyno for a good break-in, and a final check. I"m sure I took care of the problem.

Darin,

I had the same problem with my Farmall H. I pulled my oil pan and checked my main bearings. I removed the bearing caps (Make sure they go back in the same way) and used plastigauge to check bearing gaps on crank. My gaps were between .004 to .005. Replaced with .002 oversized bearings and it took care of the problem. I was able to do this all from under the tractor. Not sure if your tractor is setup this way. If you need more help E-mail me. Hope this helps

First off what oil are you using ? you should be using a 30 weight and not 10 30 . Then i would go to the oil pump , if you don't see nothing there then it is time to pull it down and replace the cam bearings and mic. the crank and turn it down and install new bearings . The oil goes to the cam then to the mains then to the rods .

I am using 30 weight for oil. I have a diagram of the engine and it doesn't show any cam bearings, just some bushings for the front of the camshaft and its used only with 366204R3 crankcase. So it doesn't show any cam bearins which I find weird.

I would check the cam bearings if the oil pump doesnot change anything, I have had engines to loose oil pressure due to cam bearings

Darin The oil pump would be the next place to look, if ok you will have the pan off for the bearings. Sounds like pump.
