My neighbor just got a 1944 Farmall H- it says FBH on the serial # plate, anyways, we can see where to add oil but can't figure out how to check the oil level. He probably should use non-detergent 30 weight- right or wrong? I would like to get him a good manual and wonder if the manuals on this site are the best ones? Any help greatly appreciated.

OIl level is checked using the two dand turned spickets on the right side of the oil pan..... open the bottom one if checking -- if oil drips out you know the level is higher...this spicket is the low level indicator.....when chaging or toping off the oil ...open the top spicket, add oil until drips out(bottom spicket closed of cource)....add the last qt. slow it takes a while for it to get to the pan....30 wt. non detg. is what they had when tractor was new...probably can't go wrong staying with it....however if you know the engine is clean in side,not alot of gunk to plug up return holes det, would be fine....original copies of the IH manuals san be had at: BINDERS BOOKS 503 684-2024 ...

Get your manuals from your local Case/IH dealer or Binder Books.

If your friend is going to run it hard, use a quality brand 30wt detergent.

If he is going to do light duty work, a quality brand 10w30 detergent will be fine.

FBH = H

The best manuals are from Binder Books 503-684-2024. I use 15W-40 in my tractors. Forget non-detergent oil. Hasn't been used to any great extent in 50 years. Any old tractor should have the oil pan and rocker arm area cleaned, the H has a cover on the right side of the engine that can be removed to expose the push rods--likely full of crud.

Try Binder Books for manuals. The ones that I have purchased were of decent quality, and they are helpful.

Paul,

No, the manuals on this site are probably the worst out there. Nothing but black and white copies of the real manual.

Two petcocks down on the oil pan. Make sure the oil level is between 'em.

Thanks Alan; Where to get the manual then? Do you have any idea what the FBH stands for? I'm assuming the petcocks are one over the other and if too full you drain the top petcock? Thanks again for the help. Paul F B

You are not overfull unless oil is above the top petcock. Think of them as the add and full marks on a dipstick. FBH is simply the serial prefix for the Farmall H. I don't know that the B stands for anything.

30wt is what I use in all mine during the warmer months. Andrew
