I just bought a 1951 Farmall Cub fromt he original owner. Cub is in nice shape, but, had not been run in many years. We took it home & w/in 20 minutes had it running nicely. After about an hour, it just died...I heard a "crackling" noise coming from the coil & it was HOT. I dissconnected the battery...let the coil cool down & took it out...I looked @ the cap & rotor & they look fine, so, I think I just need a new coil. Can I just go to Napa & get any 12V coil? Also, the tractor came w/ hydraulics & has a york rake & plow....the pump is a little low on fluid (still works o.k., do I just add 30W oil??

Thanks! Josh in Maine

Look the electrical system over and see if it was converted to 12 volts or if it still has 6 volt components. If the rest hasn't been changed over, get a 6 volt coil and 6 volt battery.

Put the 6 volt battery in with POSITIVE ground and polarize the generator before you start it.

If you use oil, make sure it is non detergent and use about 10 wt. I agree with RAW, use hy-tran.

I take it yourCub has a 12 Volt battery. If so, the coil on it was probably a 6 volt coil, and that is why it got hot and quit. I would think most any 12 volt coil would work, or a 6 v with aballast resister to cut the voltage to it. As faras the hydraulics, it would probably be agood idea to drain it and refill with Hy-Tran.
