Farmall A Coil

I have a '46 Farmall A that was converted from a magneto to a 12 volt alternator and coil setup. It got quite a workout this weekend harrowing my hay field for about 6 hours. Afterwards while using it to move some implements around it quit running and the coil was very very hot. I assume I burned it up. There aren't any markings on the coil other than saying it is 12V. Does anyone have a make and part number for a 12v coil that I can use for this application. I know if I go to NAPA or Auto-Zone and ask the counter guy for a 12v coil for a farmall tractor all I'll get is a very confused look.

Thanks in advance,
MattMO

Matt - Any internally ballasted (so called "12 volt") will work. Just ask for a generic 12 volt ignition coil. Or you can get a generic, unballasted (6 volt) coil and add your own ballast resistor.

However I gotta agree with MagMan - if you are able get that magneto system working and dispense with the coil ignition system altogether!

There are two types of 12 Volt coils. One type will be marked "use with external resistor". If you purchase this type, there must already be a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit on the tractor, or you must install one that matches the coil.

If you purchase the other type, NO resistor is needed in the ignition circuit, and you need to verify that non is installed, or the spark will be weak from the new coil due to it's operating on reduced voltage.

Matt,I dont know I think any 12 volt coil will work,at least on a motorcycle it does.My question to you is why do guys remove an excellent ignition system of the magneto.Im not trying to sound annoying but please explain magneto removal.I just dont get it.

Its becuase they are scarry. And were very exspencive to fix back in the day. But Most people that use them and work on them know that they put out 3 times the spark that a dist or electronic ign conversion does. Now Matt is this a distributor or a mag converted to an external coil?

MagMan,
I bought the tractor with the conversion already in place. My knowledge of Farmall systems is a little weak to say the least. It has a regular distributor cap on it hooked up to the coil. I guess in the original set up the the wire in the center of the distributor cap hooked up to the nipple on the magneto?

So I take it its a conversion. The main thing is if you take the coil cover off the mag and see if the origanel coil is still there. That way you could convert it back to a regular mag pretty easy but if the origanel coil is gone then the center is really hard to find and its exspencive. I dont know about regular coils to much so I dont know what the origanel problem is. SORRY JON

MagMan,
Thanks for the input. I took the cover off of the magneto and i didn't see a coil in there so I guess I'm stuck with the conversion. This really isn't a problem because the tractor runs great the way it is set up. I guess the coil just happen to be at the end of it's lifespan. (Poor thing).

Thanks again,
MattMO
