I have had a 1940 H, for about 3 years and it has started smoking while it is running. the smoke is blue which means its burning oil right? is there anything besides the rings that would make it do this. if it is the rings, where could I get new ones. I also wondered if there is a standard setting for the fuel mixture screw, for ex. 2.5 turns or something. I think mine is way off.

Jason,If you do whats called a wet and dry compression test you can tell if its rings/cyl wear or if its up top valve guides. If you do a leakdown test you can tell if a valve is not sealing etc.For the leakdown an air source [compressor]is needed and you must keep the engine from turning on air pressure. If you have a compressor you can buy a leakdown tester in car mags or Jegs catalog for under $100 dollars. The wet and dry comp test is just test compression then squirt motor oil or lube into the cylinder and if compression raises its the rings and cyl walls that are worn. The leakdown testers come with instructions and info about listening to the air leaking from differnt areas.Air out crankcase breather is worn rigs air out exhaust pipe is exhaust valve etc.Must be info on other sites about these tools to test with. Not sure.

Blue smoke usually indicates burning oil. Do you have to add oil frequently or are your spark plugs fouling? If neither of these is the case and you have enough power I’d check a few other things out first before I’d jump in on a new set of rings.

The blue smoke could be coming from oil going past the valve guides. There are valve guide seals that are available and can be installed without removing the head. You can either use air pressure or a piece of rope in the cylinder (make sure you leave some hanging out of the spark plug hole) to hold the valves up while you put on the seals. These won’t cost much and might help reduce the amount of smoke especially at startup.

Jason, the crankcase breather and line from air
cleaner to valve cover were plugged when I got my H.I ended up pulling the pan and valve cover
to clean out all the build-up also. This made a big difference for me,I now have mainly a hint
of smoke on start-up.I also found my oil pick
-up screen half plugged besides.

Blue smoke does mean oil burning but it can come from the rings and or the valves. Also if all you do is the head your looking for trouble. Most of the time doing just a valve job will cause the rings to drop out the bottom so to speak. If the valves need work so will the rings. As far as carb setting 2 turns is a starting point from there you have to adjust for your engine to run the way it should, all engines run differant. As far as where to get parts theres a lot of places. This site is one, value bilt another a parts store like napa, or the Case/IH dealer
