I am servicing my International 600 diesel and would like to change the oil in the steering gear that the steering column goes into. It sets on top of the tranny, but I cannot find anyplace to drain it from. Does anyone know where the drain plug is or do I just have to suck the oil out? Thanks, Richard.

That's a good question. I will try to look at mine tomorrow. I already took a walk through my manuals and didn't see much on the subject except their admonition to change it yearly. Paul

Paul, that"s all I could find in my manual too. It says to change it annually, and shows where to check it and fill it, but I couldn"t find anything about where to drain it. May have to get one of those suction tools that look like a grease gun.

Rich.

Well Richard,
I looked in my parts manual, owners manual, and I&T manual and found nothing. So I went out and looked at the real deal and can find nothing there either. I even took out the three lowest cap screws on the cover hoping that one of them was not a blind hole and would serve as a drain. Alas, no such luck.
It looks like you're right: it will have to be sucked out. Of course you could take the cover off the side, but I wouldn't want to go through all that work. You could just knock a hole in the side with a chisel! Warning: this may void the warranty. LOL!
I have one of those tools that looks like a grease gun. It's one of those things that you think will work better that it does. However, when I think about changing the oil in my steering box, I think that is what I'd use.
I realize that you are no farther ahead on this than before, but at least I learned something!
Paul

Paul. Well, I've come to exactly the same conclusion on this steering gear thing as you. I actually had one of those grease gun looking suction devices when I owned my shop. We used it to change the oil in the brake lathes. The lathes had drain plugs, but it made a terrible mess running all over the bench and all. Thanks a lot for your efforts, we've both learned something. Richard.
P.S. Do you have a 600 or similar?

Yes I have a 600D serial #1828. He's in his work clothes and I actually use him on my farm. I like all the "woof" he's got when pulling loads or other heavy chores. mine has the hand clutch, which is neat, but I'm not sure I'd want too many more like that. To me it's kind of clutzy when trying to back up a wagon and turn the steering wheel at the same time. I like him anyway- it's probably my rarest tractor.

Mine is serial #1589 with a foot clutch, and no power steering. It too is in its work clothes as I use it to ready about 5 acres for pumpkins and sweet corn. It's definitely a thumper and will sure pull two wagons full of people in the fall for a hayride. I am looking the stainless steel "600" emblems that go on the side of the hood. It's also my rarest tractor as they only made about 1500 of that particular model.

Mine has the power steering, but it doesn't always work, even after I rebuilt the valve and cylinder. Still, that tractor steers more easily than my SW6TA.
Good luck on those emblems! I have a set on mine, and if I think about what it would take to replace them, I worry that I'll lose them. Have you tried the guy that advertises that he has 600/
650 parts in the back of the Red Power magazine? No idea if he has any, but he usually has a little classified ad. If you need me to, I can try to find it for you.
