Should a fella set the valve lash on cylinder one when he puts his engine back in time then continue to roll the engine over and do the others?

If you are sure that you're on the compression stroke of No1 cylinder at TDC with the first notch on the damper pulley and your distributor
rotor is pointing to No1 plug wire in the cap.
Both valves should now be closed and you should
adjust them to .020" for now until you get the engine running.
After adjusting No1, rotate engine until the rotor points to No3, then adjust the valves, then No4, then No2. After you get the engine running
you should retorque the head and adjust the valves to .017" while it is still hot or very warm. This last adjustment can be done with the engine idling. It's easier to do if someone is doing the adjusting while another person is doing
the feeling with the feeler gauge or use the other procedure above. Hal

That's what I've always heard. No. 1 at TDC on compression stroke, then proceed in the firing order with every one half revolution of the crank. 1-3-4-2
