Mornin Lloyd...It sounds like you may as well go ahead and replace the carburetor. Since it does smooth out after a while it is probably the problem...Good luck...Dixieland

First, pull the wire from the coil to the distributor from the distributor and hold it close to a good ground to check to see if you have a nice fat blue spark that will jump about 7/16 of an inch or so. If you do, put the wire back in the distributor and pull a spark plug. Ground the plug and see if you have good spark across the plug electrodes. If not, replace the rotor, maybe the cap too. If you do then I’d check the ignition timing to make sure it is set correctly. If you still haven’t found it, is there a fuel overloading issue?

If you have spark and the fuel mixture is correct, next I’d take a compression test and see if the cylinders have 85 psi or more and are within 10% of each other. If not, put a little bit of oil in the cylinders and try it again. If it comes up, you have worn rings, if not you have leaky valves.
