As many of you know by now, my hobby is rescuing/saving, from the torch man and being lost forever, old tractors and farm equipment. It is happening as I write this. There are a lot of the LP power tractors especially being lost this way. Do you all feel like these should be saved? I ask a question about a particular tractor, and if it is an LP, I don't get any amount of feedback from this forum. I am a novice about these tractors and equipment, and need help, from time to time, to determen if they are worth the time trouble, and money to do this. Please let me know how you feel. Thanks, Mark L. from N. central Texas

Mark - Yes ...they should be saved. LP is great ! I grew up in it in western Nebr. too as a kid, lots of farmers had them. They are a bit different than gasoline ones, but the power always was there the same for us. I love them, ALL should be saved ! Too bad some think they are just old junkers, LP was a good clean fuel, and just needs caution with it. Great work tractors and beautiful too if restored ! Don"t let anyone knock them, because they are superb, work well. Save all you can, all makes !

Rustyfarmall gave the correct answer--LP was/is very common in some areas, other than the tank and carb, they are no different than the others.

If nothing else, pull the heads and manifolds off the LP tractors. They're set up for higher compression than the gas versions, and some of the tractor pullers are willing to pay pretty big bucks for these parts.

Yes- our local tractor salvage yard (MN) is importing tractors from all over the US. He may be looking for buyers- but he has a price limit though..

Hey Mark, I personally would say yes. But I'm spendin' your money. It is a very honorable thing that all of you folks are doing. I have a 400LP up by Royse City and have had nothing but good times with it. John A. Has a soft spot for the ol' LPs too. He'll be able to answer most any question that you might have on the good 'ol girls.

So far I have recycled 9 LP tractors out of Northern , Texas. My most recent ones are a 4010 JD & an IH 400. I just got the 400 running and was surprised at how sweet a running engine it has. The other nice thing about those Texas tractors is the sheet metal. It is normally excellent. I guess that is because of the lack of humidity. I just bought 4 MM LP's there and can't wait to get them back to Western, Pa.

Hi folks. Just got in. Pulled a 1953 SM LP to my farm. Runs good, and has the single front wheel. I am going to get 2 MLP's tomorrow, and haul them in. If I save them. I save them complete. Like I have stated in the past, I do this to save them. I really do not want to get into the business of parting them out. I let others do that. However, if it looks like that the sale of complete tarctors slow down to the point that I can't sell them that way, I may reconsider. At least they can complete others.

I have often wondered about those LP tractors. Last time I personally took in the barbecue tank to be filled they made me turn it in for some new fangled tank that had a different valve system on it (I think). I was wondering if you could even get those LP tractors filled anymore? Sure there is a way around it but how much trouble are they?

Around here that is what they do also. They call them "nurse tanks". The local propane company will come out and fill them, and in turn they fill the tractor tank. Very simple.

Dave, If you farmed with an LP powered tractor, you would have a 500 gallon or so LP storage tank on the farm, the same kind of tank that supplies your furnace, water heater, etc. You would have a hose on the tank, and fill the tractor from that tank, right there on the farm.

You could use the LP to power the tractor and do all the heating items you described and then deduct it all as farm fuel expense on you taxes (sssshhhh) don't tell the IRS. Just every once in the while you need to pay for a tank for "personal use" to show you are heating your house. Just like how every once in the while a steer in the feedlot dies and gets turned into hamburger.

It's not about what we feel. It's about what YOU feel. This is YOUR hobby. Do what makes you happy. If it doesn't make you happy, don't do it.

About the questions not being answered. Don't take this the wrong way, but you aren't OWED an answer. This is a free public forum, not paid technical support. There's no guarantee that someone who haunts here will know the answer to your question, and it could very well go completely unanswered.

There's nothing personal about it. You aren't being shunned for something you did. Your question isn't too stupid to answer. Actually, it's probably the opposite: Too in-depth and specific.

Most of us barely get by wrenching on gasoline engines. LP is a whole different animal, and something that's been long extinct in the tractor world. People that know their way around an LP system are far and few between in the tractor realm. Just don't take it personally.

Also remember that you can't save them all.

I don't only save LP tractors. I have saved many others, gas, all fuel and diesel. People will do what they want. If they feel they do not want to answer, or I don't deserve/need an answer, that's okay. I get a LOT of emails directly from some great folks. Like Sam from Tatam, Tx, John A. and others. I just wanted to hear from some other folks how they feel about these old girls getting cut up for scrap. I feel GREAT! about what I do. I have saved over 60 tractors, numerous combines and a whole passle of old implements. Just wanted to see some reaction. This has been a great discussion. Thanks to all that have partisipated !!!

GRRRR, LP and Gasoline powered are the same engines, different carburetors and fuel delivery systems is the only differance, and of course the fuel tank is differant. Once you get past those few little items everything else is the same, so even if you didn't want to play around with LP fuel, the parts on those tractors could keep a gasoline powered tractor alive and well for a long, long, time.

By that logic, diesels are the same engines too, because all that's left once you pull the fuel delivery systems on all three is the block, pistons, crank, head, and valves.

But, that's neither here nor there. The point was that he felt compelled to mention that he doesn't always get responses to his questions. My point is that the questions he's complaining about are probably specific to the LP fuel delivery system, which is something that not everybody knows about. Heck, many people that wrench on tractors as a hobby don't even understand a simple gravity-fed gasoline carburetor.

Grrrr: you need to pay attention to what people ask/say. I have never asked a question about how a LP fuel delievery system works, or to diagnos a problem. The priciple is very simple. I can fix any Farmall type system, such as the Ensign system, Ft Worth Tank, USA Tank and others. The questions, that I ask, is in different parts of the country, what a LP tractor might be worth, or how good a tractor might be, by model, whether gas, diesel, or LP. I do not do this to make a living. Many times I lose a little or break even. If I do make a small amount of money, it goes to buy fuel, tires, and repairs for my moving equipment, etc. So don't be such a sour puss. If you do not want to answer a question, it is your right not to. But I am not a complainer, I put my time, money and effort where my mouth is. And from the emil and responce to many of these type of questions, I ask, there are many folks that feel the same way.

Mark, all of these old tractors need to be saved. Makes no differance if they are LP, gas, diesel, or whatever. I don't even care if the tractor is John Deere, it still needs to be saved. Now, having said that, I will add that not all of the old tractors need to be saved intact, some are so far gone that there may only be one or two good useable parts left on them, but in any event, none of that tractor should go to the crusher until someone with experience gets to look it over. If you can buy a tractor for the same price offered by the crusher, go for it. Eventually someone will at least need some parts. If you have the money, buy all of them.

Hey Rusty. Yeah, I am doing what I can. Like I have said, if I can continue to buy them, and find new homes for them, and keep my farm/tractor rescue fund afloat. I am going to continue. I have saved everthing from Farmall, John Deere, Oliver, Case, MF, Ford and others. So onward and upward. I am having a BALL! Keeps me out of the bars. I have a VERY understanding wife, who usually goes with me when she can. I also made a deal with my Grandson, that he gets $5.00 in his savings/college fund account for everyone that I sell. Works out great.
