I have a 1950 Farmall M, with an aftermarket 3 pt. hitch, hooked up to the belly pump. I am trying to use a wood splitter, that goes on the 3 pt. hitch. I hook it into, the belly pump system, on the power side, and I have the return line, going into the fill, vent, plug area. This is the way it was, set up, when I bought it. The man who had it, didn"t know anything about tractor"s. When he used it, he screwed a cap, onto the top, of the fill tube, to prevent fluid from coming out. I alway"s believed that, this system should be propperly vented, so I made a vent, to fit into this contraption, but when I am returning the wood splitter hydraulic cylinder, home, or into itself, it alway"s pushes fluid, out of my homemade vent tube. Should I hook this wood splitter, up, like the 3 pt. hitch is, using both lines, coming out of the belly pump, or what? Is this something I am going to have to live with? If anyone has any info., I would be most appreciative... Thank"s, Brian

Greetings, I plan on building a splitter for my super m, how does your work other than the oil problem? what size cylinder does it have, and would you go bigger? thanks in advance

Try running the return on the splitter into the drain plug hole on the belly pump. Should solve the problem

Brian, I had the same problem some years back with my Super H. I have a three point hitch and bought a log splitter. There are several issues with using the belly pump for a log splitter. First, the pressure is only about 800 - 900 psi which isn't enough to split tough logs, but it works fine on easier splitting logs like oak. The second problem is what you discribed. The return oil has to pass back to the resorvoir through the vent/fill pipe. I could never get the oil to not leak out as I am sure you need a vent or it will blow out something in the belly pump. What I did was removed my belly pump and drilled a hole in the top of the casting to create an alternate vent. Since I did that and sealed the fill pipe I have had no leaks or oil coming out anywhere. I ended up taking the pump off so I could remove all the drill and tap shavings. Wasn't an easy job, but the results were good. Roger

900lbs has a lot of force if the piston is big enough.

Hi Brian...I am in the process of finding a spool valve for the same purpose. I got some feed back on my questions and one suggested not to over fill the belly pump...6 quarts...or that would happen untill it reached the proper level. Drain the pump and measure 6 quarts. If that ain't it I need to know the problem before I install my spool valve.

I do not believe, that is going to help.. I have been running my wood splitter, until it started jerking forward, while the ram was retracting, it still was dumping fluid, out onto the ground. I even tried a 16 in. tall, stand pipe, on the top of my fill tube, to try to stop the fluid from pushing out, but it still did. I believe that the hydraulic fluid, is trying to return faster than the reservoir, will take the fluid in return. maybe your spool valve, or whatever you are trying to install, will help. Let me know, what kind of valve, you are talking about please. I have never heard, of that kind of valve. What is it,and what does it do, if you could explain, please.thank"s, Brian

Hi Brian...Does the log splitter have two hoses, one on each end?

The idea of using the , hydraulic drain plug, for a return sound's better than, trying to split my tractor apart, to work on my belly pump. My M is unique, being's how it has a high and a low range, in the transmission, gearbox. In low range it does ok, but In high range, it will split about anything, but it really pushes fluid out, in high range. To make my splitter work, you have to unhook the 3pt. hitch, via quickcouples, and hook the splitter up. If you do not, it will try to raise the 3pt.hitch, when it hit's the wood. Then you have to pull the bellypump lever, all the way out, and tie it off. There are no return lines, on this M, there are only 2 main, and 1 secondary power outlet's. The return, is when you release the lever, or run the return, through the fill tube, like I do.There are 2 hoses on the 3pt.hitch, and 2 hoses, on the splitter.
