Vet, I just got a ring and pinion from a W4, or O4,, to put in my 100+hp H farmall to help speed up the final drive. I know its a direct swap and such,, but Ive never done this swap,, to know the results of what the gears will actually change in my H. I dont have any parts, or operators manuals for a W series farmall to know squat bout em. Ever done this before? ChadS

Chad, Have you ever seen an high horsepower H break the torque tube in a hard pull. They break right where the rear of the belly pump opening starts, I pulled a 70 hp H in the 80's If I were to ever build another one I would use 1/2 in steel for the cover plate and tap at least 6 more holes in the casting to hold it, Thank God I was almost out of power when it happened in the 5500 class. My 2 cents worth.

I havent broke that yet, never showed signs of it. Ive been looking for the origianl hyd pump cover,, our club, lets you remove the pumps, etc etc as long as a steel plate was offered in the books to replace the parts removed. I have seen one crack along the side along the side of the flywheel. Welded, and made a plate on both sides to help hold it,, owner replaced it when the season was done,,,,, I usually stay under 5000# with my High Hp H's, They may pull harder than most Ms',, but,, thats just it,, they are not M's,,, Ive got a 70 hp 1950 model H, with the low low 1st gear,,, then I have a 100+hp 1940 model H, then a bone stock 53 Super H that I pull with on a regular basis. 25 pulls a year, 4 hooks per tractor. I try not to overweight them, I once got crazy, and weighted the 1940 H up to 7000# and ran modified class, and beat the big M's and the MM', and the ollies, Jd's,,, on that day,,, the next pull after,,, It snapped the constant mesh gears, bent the lower drive gear shaft, all I heard was a click,,,,, After rebuilding it,, I stayed out of the heavy classes, under 5500, I like to keep it all in one piece for more than a week at a time. LOL! Antique pulling, is a great sport to go out and work the ol tractor,, like many other sports, there is dangers involved, and you gotta know the limits of your machine,, Ive seen a JD G break completely in two once before,,,, ChadS

Chads, I am not a mathmetician, but I think someone could figure it out. The W-4 had basically the same ground speeds in any given gear as an H, except the H is on 38 Inch rears and the W-4 uses 24inch? Not sure of that but the differance you are looking for would be the differance, or percentage, in tire sizes.

Well, I found out the H ring and pinion is 12/49=4.08 gear ratio. The W4, or O4 gears are 18/50=2.77 ratio, which is quite a jump in speed in my opinion. It speeds it up like 1.34 or something like that,,, Im running 15.5x38 on 16 inch rims, so they are not a real tall tire, maybe bout the same height, maybe a bit taller than a 12.4X38. So, with the ratio #'s, mite help me convert the book ground speeds to the conversion for the W4 ring and pinion. The reason Im doing this swap is that my engine, is tearing up 4th gear when Im pulling the tractor in antique classes, it simply kicks it out of 4th, and tears up the slider, and the drive gear. Its a very small gear, and I want to put the HP to a bigger, 2nd, and 3rd gear. 2nd, being my power gear, and 3rd being my speed gear during a pull. Chad
