Somewhat OT, but kinda interesting...

The neighbors ran their annual Old Fashioned Farm Day last Sunday. This event features draft animals plowing and fitting "like in the old days".

More than a dozen teams were already at work when I visited early in the day. Despite wet conditions (over 2" of rain fell the day before), plowing and fitting went on. Fascinating to observe animals plow and fit in ground conditions that would mire most modern equipment.

Watching these animals, implements and their drivers at work gives one a true appreciation for the dramatic advance in agricultural technology over the past 100 years. Punch below for a few photos...

Bob M. Thanks as always for sharing your great pictures. Grew up in Northern Maine and we had three teams in the barn during that time. Always was fond of work horses. Thanks again. Dick in Vermont.

Here in central PA, you can see that every day this time of year. Most Amish in these parts plow with 8 mules and a 2 bottom Pioneer plow behind the forecart.

Thanks Bob, As always great photos, to think that my granddad did it that way in upstate Ny back in the thirtys, darn I missed it! I remember my Dad telling me that my grandfather was real good at handling those teams, looks like a lot of work to me!!!

My grandpa used a walking plow instead of the sulky because when you hit a rock with the sulky and it jumps over it, the rider gets thrown off.

Hi Bob, You can still see that kind of farming up in Lancaster PA, about 45 minutes from my home. The Amish still use horses and mules. They've crossed some of those draft horses with a Jack and have one big mule. I saw eight of those big mules hooked to a Conestoga wagon up at
Kinser PA.

The Amish has had to make some big changes in order to ship milk. They had to install coolers, milking parlors and use milkers. Even though they don't use electricity in their homes, they had to install generators for power. My wife sold a pressure canner to an Amish family and we delivered it since they don't use cars. A young lad was mowing off the corn stalks with a big rotary mower with an engine mounted on it, but was being towed by 3 mules.

They're very nice pictures of the way farming was done years ago. Hal

I remember when my Grandpa plowed with a team, he walked behind the one-bottom plow.

The locals just had their plowing bee this past weekend. The plowed, harrowed and planted about 7 acres. Lots of teams out working. Only had one runaway when a team got hung up in the traces. This fall they will come in and cut/bind it with teams and then run it through a thresher.
