Thanks guys, she's out of the field in reply to Hugh MacKay, 04-26-2005 13:48:11

So, a lot of running around but she is out of the field with only a little humiliation on my end. So I took off the starter and took her down to South Durham where a guy works starters. Of course he puts it on the machine and it cranks right up. So he says it must be my wiring (which I already checked, so I know it's not that). Anyway, so I head home, as the rain is about to start coming down and wanting to get it out of the field if I can (as it's in easy view of the road and knowing my luck, someone would try to cannibalize the parts after midnight), I went back to work putting it back on. Having got it back on, now the battery is near dead from all my attempts to start it. So I borrow the neighbors 4 wheel drive (just in case the fields get sloppy wet) and jumpstart the tractor...and waa-laa, it starts. Of course, the background music to this is sirens up and down my road as the State Police are trying to track down a fugitive who was fleeing from them in the forest just down the road from my farm. I checked my barn with my rifle just in case he decided to hide out with my chickens before I headed out to the tractor. Lessons Learned: 1. I did the right thing first hammering the starter but that wasn't it. As Hugh said, I believe it just locked up. 2. I should have just removed the starter bolts, pulled the starter away, then reinstalled and tried again, I think this would have done it. 3. All that being said, I am glad it went down the way it did as I do indeed intend to replace the bendix gear as well as the ring gear (and now as a result of all y'all's help, I know what they are called) when I split the tractor sometime in the future, but fortunately, not today. 4. Trust and depend on the folks on this board to come to my aid, even in an "emergency" situation. I wouldn' have gotten better advice if I called "Tractor 911". Since I didn't grow up on a farm and I don't know too many farmers or tractor lovers, if I didn't have you guys, I would probably be broke and sad and my wife would leave me for all the money I blew listening to people who wanted to replace everything with new stuff at the drop of a hat. THANKS!!!!! Ramon
