Using the old JD sickle bar mower to knock down some weeds last night - I was wondering about the value of a belly mower for the Super. There are so many more places I could get on the yard if my mower were only as wide as the tractor. Also, it would free up the rear of the tractor to do some utility tasks like pulling the drag, seeder, or watering cart.

They use a gearbox over belt don't they (PTO driven) - is there a good size or model you guys recommend for an H? Hydraulic lift? There has to be some of these around here in NW Iowa - what can a guy expect to pay?

Thanks - I always look forward to your input
Eric

I must really have a bad looking yard, I mow with a 460 utility and a 7'rear discharge mower, All four of my tires run on uncut grass

I have a 1940 H equipped with a Woods 60 inch finish belly mower. The tractor would easily handle a 72 inch mower. The neighbor just south of me has an Artsway 72 inch on his H. Both of these are hydraulic lift, and are powered from a pulley mounted on the PTO with long belts to the mower. The woods uses just one belt, the Artsway uses 3. I honestly think one brand is as good as the other. I can only estimate the price of a new unit, somewhere around $1,500? just a guess.

Can one be found used in fair to good shape for less than $500?

Eric

I priced a 72" woods in the fall for my super C.About $1900 for the mower plus around $200 for the mounting hardware to make it fit and they where going to charge me shipping. Ended up buying an H with a 6' Artsway on it for $2700 so I got a tractor and mower for about the price of the new woods. But hey, the H mows great. I'm sure you would love it. Everyone around here kept trying to sell me a 3 point pull behind but I dont think my old neck would deal with all that looking backwards. I love mine.

I really don't know, but probably. I have owned mine for going on 6 years now. The mower was used, and mounted on an H with good tires and overall very good general condition. I paid $1,600 for the outfit.

New 60" Artsway is over $3000 for a finishing mower to use on lawns. I was told Woods are just as high priced, but did not check them for myself.

Call me crazy, but when I mow the mower has to at least cover the tires of the tractor. Mowing grass that's been mashed down by the rear tractor tires doesn't work all that well. A 60" deck on an H? You'd have to dish the wheels in and slide them so close that the'd be rubbing your butt. Then the tractor would be pretty tipsy...

There are a fleet of sidewalk plows set up like that, with CHAINS nonetheless. The poor driver's gotta be beat to death with the tires running so close like that.

Nah, you want a 72" deck, minimum. Even then you need the wheels dished in, but at least you and the rear tires won't be trying to share the seat.

Don't you run over the grass with the front wheels first regardless?

Front wheels don't make as much of an impression as the rears. They're smoother. The treads on the rears punch the grass down so you can't suck it up with the mower. If you cut before you run over it with the rears, when the grass does straighten back up, it won't be taller than the grass around it. Dunno about you, but I like my lawn smooth and even, not "scruffy" with tractor-tread tracks all through it.

As for you RustyFarmall, what's your problem? Sheesh. What's wrong with my opinion that a mower deck should cover the width of the tractor? It's my opinion. I'm not forcing you to abide by it. Do whatever you want.

MOW, you have an opinion, I have facts. I also am very particular about how my lawn looks, and I would not use my rig if it did not do as good a job as any other mower. The facts are that it does every bit as good, if not better, than anything else I have seen, and the only place it leaves tire tracks is when I try to turn too short, and then it is the front tires that leave the marks. I invite you to visit anytime you want and compare my lawn to any other lawn that has been cut with a 60 inch deck. Is that fair enough?

Fact: When we drive our full-size tractors across the lawn, they leave tracks that the lawn mower (a Farmall Cub with a 60" Woods deck, btw), can't mow out. There's an imprint of a tractor tread in the lawn for the next 2-3 mowings.

Fact: An H is a much heavier tractor, puts more pounds per square inch to the ground, than any rider lawn tractor, or even a Farmall Cub.

Fact: Lug tires concentrate the weight of the tractor on the lugs. They WILL put indentations into all but the hardest of lawns. Turf tires, and tri-rib fronts for that matter, spread the load much more evenly over a larger area.

Lug tires leave imprints on all but the hardest gravel lawn. I'd rather not mash the grass into the ground before I've mowed it.

Thank you JB, don't know who MOW is, but I doubt if he has ever done much mowing.

No, the woods mower does not mount directly under the center of the tractor, but is offset to the right, and extends beyond the right tire by about one foot. The cut grass is thrown to the left, so if you do it properly, the tires are never running on un-cut grass, and even if they do, the mower has enough lift to pull the grass up and mow it off clean. It will not leave any marks in your yard any differant than any riding lawnmower.
