PTO seal on C

I think I messed up this time. The PTO shaft seal on my C was leaking so I ordered a new one and started to put it in tonight. It looked like the old one could be pulled from the outside which I managed to do before I realized it was supposed to come out from the inside. Next, I pulled the PTO housing but now I can not get the gear off the shaft. It has 3 holes in it that looks like a small 3 jaw puller would fit or I'm guessing maybe the shaft could be pressed out of it from inside out. Anyone want to tell me how it's supposed to be done? On the bright side, I got the new pilot bearing and the good clutch installed. When the throwout bearing gets here, I can put that part back together.

I assume you are talking about the gear on the PTO shaft on the inside of the housing. You have to use a puller to get it off. Should not be too hard to get off. You can't drive the shaft out, because there is a woodruff (half moon) key in the shaft. That key will hit against the housing when you try to drive the shaft out, preventing removal of the shaft. However, you may try a few raps on the end of the shaft to break the gear loose from the shaft. Then you should be able to pull it off fairly easily. As others said, the old seal can come out from the outside. However, really hard to get it out since it is so thick.

You were right the first time. The PTO seal comes out from the outside. If you still had the orginal seal it would have been a thick double sided rawhide seal. The new ones are of course neoprem single sided only about half the size of the orginal seal.

When I change them I drill through the seal in two places 180 deg. from each other and then use a Slide Hammer Dent Puller to remove the old seal.

By the time I finally got all of it out, there were 2 lip seals, 1 flat leather seal and 3 washers all within a sheet metal case. It was the case part that stumped me in the beginning and it ended up being the hardest part to get out. I had to split it with a small cold chisel from top to bottom then grab it with a pair of vice grips. That 1 measly lip seal I put back doesn't seem adequate in comparison.

On much closer inspection, I think I still have a piece of the old seal stuck in there. Like some kind of scraper or something. The lights in my shop aren't the greatest but out in the light this morning, I can see a seam around the lip of the casting. Once I get that piece out, then I can tap in the new seal. I've got to learn not to work on this stuff late at night when my mind ain't working exactly right.

What came out the back first was a sandwich of 2 thin metal washers with a piece of flat leather in between, then the lip seal was in behind that. The reason I thought I was wrong is that the edge of the cast iron housing is rolled over somewhat making the actual hole that I pulled the pieces through smaller than the inside diameter. I couldn't see any way to drive the new seal in through that smaller ID hole. To get the old ones out, I drilled a hole and then screwed a sheet metal screw in and caught the head of that with a pry bar.
