Farmall H 3 Point Questions

I am thinking of throwing a three pint hitch on my 1946 Farmall H. I am having difficulties locating plows and discs and think the updated hitch will make my plow/disc hunt easier with new technology.

Any suggestions or concern I should have? Any manufacturer's recommendations?

Is the Saginaw a good one to go with?

?????

Thanks,

Scott

I think that if I had to do over again, I'd go with the Saginaw. That one will let you keep the original drawbar. The aftermarket drawbar that I got for my 3 point is pretty flimsy.

As far as equipment, try an ad in some of your local (rural) weekly papers. I have had very good success finding everything from a 2 bottom pull type plow to a soybean spiral.

Even with a 3 pt., I'd go with a pull type plow (i.e. JD 44 2-16) since you will not have any kind of draft control. A pull type works pretty good, cuts through and covers lots of trash, and can be adjusted to make nice even furrows. It does have some trouble taking full slices on side hills. They made a ton of them and parts are easily available.

I am keeping an eye out for a wheel disk to cut down so that my H is be able to pull it. Most of the small 3 pt. disks look like toy accessories for an atv. If you pick up more than about 500 pounds with the three point, the front end get a little light.

I agree. The saginaw hitch sounds like a really good setup but is going to run you $700. Even used 3 point hitch setups go for $500.

Financially the best choice is to either buy drag type equipment or sell your H and buy a newer tractor. Most of the 300's and 400's already have the 3 pt conversion on them and the 460's and 560's came with 3 pts. The 300 - 560's run just $500 or so more than the H and M's around here and you get a tractor that is 20 years newer and has live hydraulics and live pto plus the 3 pt hitch.

Of course if you like the H and want to keep it then it is a personal decision and not a financial one and the saginaw is a nice good looking 3pt hitch.

My 2 cents....

IH didn't come out with 3pts until the 706/806 series tractors. The 460/560 still has a straight drawbar, or a fast hitch.

I don't see why you have a problem finding pull type equipment. Shoot I have 3 pull type plows and 2 of them are for sale, and as far as disc. there out there if you just look enough. Post an ad looking for them. For what it would cost for a 3 point you should be able to buy a plow and a dosc. and almost a brush hog to boot

I am in the same boat here. I cant find pull type equipment. I hate to spend the money on the 3pt but I dont see any other way. I am looking for a brush hog and maybe a plow. I live around the Kansas City, Kansas area. Just not much around here. Hey old, where are you located at? Are you close?

Get yourself a copy of "Grass and Grain" published in Manhattan Ks. They list auctions for the entire state and haveto have at least 75-100 sales listed per week. They also have a pretty good classified section for farm equipment, usually about 3-4 pages of "For Sale" adds.
