I posted before about having trouble with the power steering on my 454 gas. I pulled the diverter valve out but could only get the bottom piece w/threads and spring to come out. From looking in the shop manual it looks like their is still more to come but it won't budge.

Pulling it an putting it back in took care of the problem for a few minutes but then got tight again. I've found that if you pull slightly on the aux hydrolic lever, just to where it is moving fluid, the steering is as smooth as it should be. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Joe, on the 454, the oil pump feed the steering in priority, then the remote, hitch, PTO and brake. The flow-divider valve give 3 GPM to the steering and 9 GPM to the hitch system. When the valve is stuck in the bottom, you have no steering, no PTO and if stuck in top, you have no hitch, no remote. Remove the plug and the spring, put a container under the hole, start the engine and pull the remote lever. The flow-divider valve goes out in the container. Sand the valve with a 400 sand-paper and try again. Change the filter if it's old. May be you have dirt on the oil, check in the filter housing when you open it. When the filter is full of dirt, it have a by-pass valve that open and allow the oil to go direct to the pump via a screen. In this case, dirt can go in the system and cause your problem. Hope this help you. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Thank you for the reply. I tried starting the tractor with the plug and spring out hoping that it would push the rest out but all it did was spray fluid. (sitting in neutral no pto, hyrdolics or steering wheel movement). The filter is pretty new, might not hurt to change it again though.

Hi Joe, have you pull the remote lever at the time? May be it's stuck bad. With a concrete anchor, you can pull it, you place the anchor in the valve, screw on the bolt and pull out the valve. Hope this help you Bernard le mécano Québec Canada
